When looking for hotels in Poiana Teiului, it helps to start by choosing a theme: would you like your stay to focus more on the scenery around the reservoir or on architectural and church history? The Lacul Izvorul Muntelui, the Piatra Teiului limestone cliff and the viaduct are among the area’s scenic landmarks. The museum, wooden churches and Petru Vodă represent historical and religious themes.

Reservoir, limestone cliff and viaduct

Lacul Izvorul Muntelui, also called Lacul Bicaz, is a reservoir on the middle course of the Râul Bistrița in Romania’s Eastern Carpathians. It lies four kilometres upstream from Bicaz in Neamț County. The two names refer to the same lake—a useful distinction to keep in mind when you encounter different place names.

Piatra Teiului is a limestone cliff at the end of the reservoir on the Râul Bistrița. It has been designated a Category III natural monument by the IUCN since 1951 and is now a geological reserve. This landmark therefore draws attention both to the rock formation and to its protected status.

The main road connection to Lacul Izvorul Muntelui is the DN15 on the Bicaz–Poiana Largului section. The Poiana Teiului Viaduct, also called the Poiana Largului Viaduct, is a road viaduct on the DN15 national road. It crosses the end of Lacul Bicaz by the village of Poiana Largului, in the commune of Poiana Teiului in Neamț County. This makes it possible to distinguish the road connection to the lake from the structure that crosses its end as two specific features of the landscape.

Architectural history and religious sites

The “Constantin Romanescu” Zoological Museum is located in the village of Dreptu, in the commune of Poiana Teiului. It was founded in 1927. Its founding year provides a clear historical reference point, without implying anything about current opening hours or offerings.

The wooden church in Galu was built by local craftsmen in 1818. Constructed entirely of wood, it is in the Moldavian style and displays Transylvanian influences. Its year of construction and stylistic influences offer different points of interest if you are interested in regional architectural history.

Mănăstirea Petru Vodă includes a wooden church, completed in 1992 and dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The monastery is accessed by a forest road that branches off from the village of Petru Vodă. If you are travelling from Poiana Largului towards Târgu Neamț, the turn-off is on the left.

The tomb of Father Iustin Pârvu is also in Petru Vodă and has become a place of pilgrimage. Together with the history of the monastery church, it provides a religious focus distinct from the architectural history of the wooden church in Galu.

Water activities and choosing a focus

In the wider area around Poiana Teiului, trips on Lacul Izvorul Muntelui are offered by boat, pedal boat and mini-yacht, as well as mini-cruises. These offer views of Poiana Largului and the Poiana Teiului Viaduct. If you are planning one of these trips, check current availability with the provider.

The limestone cliff and viaduct add geology and road construction to the scenic perspective. You can therefore choose your accommodation based on the theme that interests you most during your stay.
