For a trip to Izvoru Muntelui, you can choose among different nature experiences: hiking trails on Ceahlău, Lacul Izvoru Muntelui, and Secu Forest Reserve. Three of the eight hiking trails on Ceahlău intended for tourists begin in Izvoru Muntelui.
Compare hiking trails on Ceahlău
Ceahlău hiking trail “Traseul nr. 1” begins in a small clearing next to Cabana Izvorul Muntelui and is 5.6 kilometers long. For part of the way, it follows the boundary of the Poliţa cu Crini scientific reserve. “Traseul nr. 2” is 5.7 kilometers long, rated moderate, and leads from Cabana Izvorul Muntelui via Curmătura Lutu Roşu to Cabana Dochia.
The route lengths differ by only 0.1 kilometers. Other features can also help you compare them: Traseul nr. 2 passes a named waypoint on its way to Cabana Dochia and is rated moderate; Traseul nr. 1 follows the boundary of the scientific reserve for part of the way. This lets you consider length, rating, and route separately rather than choosing based on distance alone. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Lake, tributaries, and landscape
Lacul Izvoru Muntelui is the largest artificial lake on Romania’s inland rivers. At the point where the Izvorul Alb stream flows into the reservoir is the 150-hectare Lacul Izvoru Muntelui aquatic nature reserve. It protects stream mouths as spawning grounds for rheophilic salmonids such as trout and huchen. Rheophilic fish are adapted to flowing water; the tributaries and their role as spawning habitat are therefore part of the lake’s natural character, as is the open water.
A road that follows the shore of Lacul Izvoru Muntelui offers views of the water, the surrounding hills, villages in the valleys, and more distant mountain ridges. The landscape can thus be appreciated at several scales: from the lake to the valleys and on to the mountain ridges. This perspective on the water and hills complements the specific lengths and routes of the Ceahlău trails.
Putting Secu Forest Reserve in context
The main access route to Secu Forest Reserve is the 15.6-kilometer Baraj–Pârâul Mare forest road. It connects Bicaz, Secu, Izvorul Alb, and the commune of Ceahlău. As conditions on forest roads can change, check local conditions before driving. The forest reserve may be visited for scientific, educational, recreational, and tourism purposes.
For trip planning, each of the three topics offers a different focus: the Ceahlău trails are defined by their length and waypoints, and Traseul nr. 2 is also rated moderate. The lake’s nature reserve and stream mouths are central to understanding the area; access and designated purposes for visits are important at Secu Forest Reserve.
