Durau brings together several distinct travel interests in the Ceahlău Mountains: hiking trails lead to Cascada Duruitoarea, Trail No. 4 offers a panorama from Cabana Fântânele, and Pârtia Durău is the place for skiing and sledding. The church of Mănăstirea Durău adds architectural and art history to the natural surroundings and sports. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these interests you want to shape your trip around. You can also plan an approximate time budget for the hike to the waterfall.
Hiking and finding your way in Ceahlău National Park
Durău Park is located at the foot of the Ceahlău Massif, in Stațiunea Durău. Durau is also one of the main gateways to Parcul Național Ceahlău. Rangers are on hand there to provide information and advice on route selection, trail conditions, weather, destinations along the trails, and the equipment required. Take this guidance into account when choosing your route and equipment. The destination is not the only thing that matters on a hike: trail conditions and weather are also part of choosing a route.
From Durau, Cascada Duruitoarea can be reached via three marked hiking trails in about two hours. The actual walking time depends on the route chosen and the conditions, so this duration is only a guide. Trail No. 4 offers a different perspective: from Cabana Fântânele, there is a panorama of Stațiunea Durău and the Munții Bistriței. For the waterfall, the focus is on the specific destination and approximate time required, while Trail No. 4 emphasizes the views of Durău and the Bistriței Mountains. You can choose your hiking focus based on whether you are more interested in a waterfall destination or a panorama.
Skiing and sledding as seasonal activities
Pârtia Durău offers opportunities for beginners and advanced skiers to ski and sled. As a seasonal facility, it offers a different focus from the hiking trails; bear this in mind when choosing when to travel.
Monastery church and history
The church of Mănăstirea Durău is a cross-shaped brick building featuring elements of Moldavian architecture from the 18th century. The interior is decorated with encaustic painting. The encaustic paintings were created by students and graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Iași under the guidance of N. Tonitza; Corneliu Baba was also among the artists involved. The building’s design and its interior paintings offer two different ways to appreciate the monastery church: its Moldavian architecture and the artistic decoration of its interior.
According to tradition and the monastery’s history, the first monastic settlement in Durau was founded in 1620 by the nun Marina. She was the daughter of a Moldavian voivode and the granddaughter of Vasile Lupu; together with two maids, she entered monastic life there. This spans the period from the traditional founding of the settlement in 1620 to the Moldavian architectural elements of the 18th century.
