Oglinzi brings together the history of a church and a much older subject: prehistoric salt mining. It also features the eastern hills, the edge of the state forests and the history of the spa resort. This offers travelers a choice between architectural and church history, archaeological traces and connections with the landscape. These subjects belong to different periods—a useful distinction when considering which aspects of the place interest you most.

Church History and Carved Furnishings

The first church in Oglinzi was built in 1653 by order of Prince Vasile Lupu. Construction of the present-day Biserica Sf. Nicolae Oglinzi began in 1918 and was completed in 1937. The documented dates of church construction thus range from the first church of the 17th century to the present-day church building of the 20th century.

The present-day church is a cross-shaped brick building. This gives us two distinct features: brick describes the building material, while the cross shape describes the floor plan. The furnishings also have their own precisely dated history. The iconostasis of Biserica Sf. Nicolae Oglinzi, carved entirely from linden wood, was made between 1935 and 1937. The two craftsmen named for the work, Patapie Cipenovici and Nicolae Milan, came from Bukovina. Their work took place during the final years of construction, up to the church’s completion. The construction period of 1918 to 1937 and the making of the iconostasis from 1935 to 1937 can therefore be considered side by side. An iconostasis is a screen decorated with images in a church interior.

A notice dated June 23, 2026, reported extensive consolidation work at Biserica Sf. Nicolae Oglinzi. Check whether access is possible before visiting.

Archaeological Sites and Landscape

Oglinzi-Băi broadens the perspective well beyond architectural history: the archaeological site is a prehistoric salt-mining site dating to the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods. The focus here is not a church building, but the early extraction of salt. This offers a different way of approaching the history of the area than dating the church, making the two subjects easy to distinguish.

Another archaeological site, Oglinzi-Lăzăreni, is on the right bank of the Brustura stream, where the Babete stream flows into it. This description places the site at the confluence of the two waterways. Oglinzi-Băi and Oglinzi-Lăzăreni thus represent different archaeological points of reference: one is known as a prehistoric salt-mining site, while the other is located by its position on the Brustura and Babete streams.

The landscape also has several clearly named points of reference. Oglinzi reaches the edge of the state forests, while the Crucii and Alivanca hills extend to the east. Tourist trails run in the area of Oglinzi resort. Cabana Băile Oglinzi is in the Sărata Valley area, on the slope of Dealul Pleşu. The forest edge, eastern hills and valley slope thus offer different points of reference for finding your way around the landscape.

The History of the Spa Resort

Oglinzi Resort is 3 km from Târgu Neamț and at an elevation of 480 m. Until 1939, it attracted visitors from across the country. A tourist description from 2009 listed warm baths, paraffin packs, galvanic baths, dynamic currents, ultrasound, massages and therapeutic exercise as the treatments available at the time. This history as a spa resort complements the architectural and archaeological subjects with another perspective on Oglinzi: its role at the time as a destination for treatment and relaxation.
