Bicaz offers several specific travel themes: Lake Izvorul Muntelui and the Bicaz Dam, historic buildings and the collections of the Museum of History and Ethnography. Fishing on the lake is also an option. When planning, consider whether water engineering history, cultural heritage or an activity on the lake should shape your stay.

Reservoir and Dam

Lake Izvorul Muntelui is the largest artificial reservoir on Romania’s inland rivers. It was created on the Bistrița River between 1950 and 1960. The Bicaz Dam was built during the same period, also between 1950 and 1960. Its dimensions give the structure a tangible scale: the dam is 435 metres long and 127 metres high. Those interested in water engineering history can compare the lake and dam by the period in which they were created, while distinguishing between the reservoir as a body of water created by people and the dam as a structure.

Historic Buildings and Museum

Casa Regală in Bicaz is a historic monument at 4 Strada Barajului and was built in 1912. It was intended as a holiday residence for the royal family. Another link to the town’s building history is the former Teatrul Sătesc „Ion Kalinderu”: it was built by order of King Carol I, to plans by the architect Carol Zane. The details about purpose, construction date and commissioning authority offer different points of reference for a cultural and historical focus.

The permanent exhibition of the Bicaz Museum of History and Ethnography is divided into three sections. It covers the history of the Bistrița Valley and includes 102 paintings donated by the painter Iulia Hălăucescu. The ethnographic section displays woven textiles, elements of traditional costume and peasant furniture. Regional history, paintings and everyday objects thus feature side by side as distinct themes in the collection.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Bicaz can be reached from Piatra-Neamț via the DN 15. The routes from Vatra Dornei and Toplița use the DN 17B and DN 15. As road conditions can change, it is advisable to check them for your travel date. The Ceahlău National Park visitor centre is in Izvoru Muntelui, in the town of Bicaz, Neamț County. In December 2022, Bicaz was certified as a tourist resort of local interest.

Route to Ceahlău

A 1976 mountain guide listed a marked access route to Ceahlău from the town of Bicaz, via the Bicaz-Baraj and Izvorul Muntelui mountain huts. This information is based on that older guide; check current trail conditions before setting out.

Fishing and Recreational Boating

At Lake Izvorul Muntelui near Bicaz, you can fish for species including perch, zander, trout, bream, roach and crucian carp. If fishing is part of your plans, check which permits are required before your trip.

If you are planning such a trip, check beforehand whether it is currently being offered.

Choosing a Focus for Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment in Bicaz, a simple comparison may help: the lake and dam were both created or built between 1950 and 1960, providing a clear point of reference for a trip focused on water engineering history. Historic buildings and museum collections offer a cultural focus.
