Bicaz-Chei has a clear connection to its landscape and specific routes: the village lies in the valley of the upper reaches of the Bicaz River, at the foot of the Ceahlău, Hășmaș and Tarcău Mountains. The area also has the Bicaz Gorge, the route to Peștera Munticelu and opportunities for climbing. When planning your trip, it is worth considering road connections and activities separately.
Connections through the valley and gorge
The DN12C national road runs through Bicaz-Chei, passes through Cheile Bicazului and connects Piatra Neamț with Gheorgheni. In Bicaz-Chei, the DJ127A county road branches off; it leads via Dămuc to Lunca de Jos in Harghita County. The two roads therefore provide different connections. Part of the DJ127A is unpaved; take this into account when planning your route.
Gorges and protected landscape
Cheile Bicazului was formed by the Bicaz River and its tributaries. The gorge stretches for 8 km between Lacu Roșu and Bicazul Ardelean. The Cheile Bicazului Nature Reserve, a mixed-type protected area, lies within Bicaz-Chei. The village is also on the eastern side of Cheile Bicazului–Hășmaș National Park. Cheile Șugăului is at the eastern edge of the national park, at the entrance to Bicaz-Chei. This helps distinguish the gorge, nature reserve and national park as separate geographical features.
The route to Peștera Munticelu
The access path to Peștera Munticelu starts near Bicaz-Chei. It first climbs beneath the eastern face of Piatra Glodului, then crosses alpine meadows. Inside the cave, the underground area Lacul Zânelor lies in its southeastern part. Cimitirul Urșilor is about 35 m away. The route description and the named cave areas provide different points of reference: a route through the landscape and two places inside the cave.
Climbing and hiking
Some of the rock faces in Cheile Bicazului have climbing routes. Check the local conditions before taking part. Via Ferrata Astragalus is in Bicaz Chei commune, Neamț County, at the southern edge of the Cheile Șugăului–Munticelu Nature Reserve, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. At Turnul Mare, it comprises six interconnected routes and variants of different lengths and difficulty levels. Access requires prior registration with Cabana Ecolog or the operator, as well as certified personal protective equipment. Check the conditions again before your trip. A hike through Cheile Bicazului and Cheile Bicăjelului is also offered as a tourist program; confirm the details before booking.
Local customs and when to visit
Bicaz-Chei’s tourist character includes traditional folk architecture, traditional livelihoods, handicrafts and local customs that have been maintained for a long time. One specific annual event is the pastoral festival marking the sheep’s ascent to the mountain pastures: it takes place every year on the first Sunday in May, in connection with the formation of the sheepfolds. If you would like to include culture and landscape in your travel plans, this custom offers a seasonal point of interest alongside the trails, gorges and climbing opportunities.
