Podeni combines a protected karst landscape, a cave and several hiking trails with different routes. To plan your stay, you can sort nature destinations and tours by their respective characteristics: two hikes specify both distance and duration; others cross a mountain ridge, lead to a spring or follow a connection to Podeni. The trails therefore differ in the time required and their routes.
Karst and Protected Landscape
The Izvorul și stâncăriile de la Câmana natural monument was designated a nationally significant protected area in 2000. The area covers 25 ha and features karst formations. It lies within the administrative territory of Podeni commune, on the border with Caraș-Severin County and near Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park. Parts of the national park and Platoul Mehedinți Geopark also lie within the commune; the Platoul Mehedinți protected area also extends across the commune’s administrative territory.
Câmana covers 25 ha. The other protected-area designations, by contrast, concern the administrative territory of Podeni commune. This makes it possible to distinguish geographically between the individual natural monument and the commune’s connections to designated areas.
Peștera Gramei: Location and Visit
Peștera Gramei is in Podeni commune, on the right-hand slope of the Topolnița Valley, in Dealul Croavelor, at an altitude of 445 m. Its fossil and subfossil passages have a combined total length of 390 m. Most of the cave is relatively easy to traverse, but it also has some difficult sections. Protective gear and lighting are required to visit it. Check the local access regulations before your visit.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes
The “Băile Herculane – Cheile Feregari–La Șipot–Podeni” trail is four kilometres long, takes five hours, is marked with a red dot and is rated easy. A hike to the Izvorul și stâncăriile de la Câmana natural monument in Podeni commune takes about eight hours and is around twelve kilometres long. The Câmana hike is therefore longer in both distance and duration. The shorter distance does not correspond to a proportionally shorter estimated time, so compare both when planning. Check the conditions on the Băile Herculane–Cheile Feregari–La Șipot–Podeni route before setting out; for the Câmana hike, also check the current arrangements and trail conditions.
The “Podeni – Creasta Munților Mehedinți – La Ciucioare” hiking trail leads from Podeni over the Mehedinți mountain ridge to the La Ciucioare spring. On the “Băile Herculane – Crucea Albă–Izvorul Jelărău–Culmea Munților Mehedinți” route, the trail continues for about one kilometre from Izvorul Jelărău along a path to Podeni. On the “Băile Herculane–Uzina Electrică–Cheile Șaua Padina–La Marginea” route, you can continue from La Marginea to Podeni on a road that branches off from the ridge trail. The routes therefore differ in specific ways: one crosses the mountain ridge to the spring, while the others describe connections to Podeni via a path or a branching road.
