Popeşti-Leordeni offers a cultural and historical focus spanning different periods: a Bronze Age settlement, the ruins of a 19th-century manor house, an Orthodox church with dated founder portraits, and a monument to those who fell in the First World War. A centrally located park and a body of water for sport fishing add to the local attractions. This mix is especially interesting for planning a trip that takes history as its starting point and complements the selection with other local themes.

Archaeology on the banks of the Dâmbovița

The “Popești Leordeni – Conacul Costaforu” archaeological site lies on the eastern edge of Leordeni, on a high terrace on the right bank of the Dâmbovița. It includes a Bronze Age settlement of the Tei culture and the ruins of a 19th-century manor house. This means two clearly distinct periods stand side by side in one place: the Bronze Age and a much later building history. Its riverside location and terrace setting add a specific landscape context to the historical significance.

Church art and local remembrance

The Orthodox Biserica Sfinții Voievozi in Leordeni was built in 1807–1808 by the great boyar Mihail Manu. It was consecrated on 26 March 1811, Palm Sunday. The construction and consecration dates mark two distinct moments in its history. The founder portraits are also precisely documented: Nicolae Polcovnicul painted them in oil on canvas in 1825, and they were placed on the west wall of the pronaos. The pronaos, the church’s vestibule, is therefore an important clue to the portraits’ location. Taken together, the year of creation, artist, painting technique and placement offer a specific insight into the church’s furnishings.

The monument to the heroes who fell in the First World War commemorates local history in a different way. Its column bears the inscription “Eroilor din Popești-Leordeni comuna recunoscătoare”; two marble plaques on its sides list the heroes’ names. The inscription expresses the community’s gratitude, while the plaques link the remembrance to individual names.

A more recent religious layer is the “Duminica Sfinților Români” monastery. It was built between 2003 and 2006 and founded by Romanian Patriarch Teoctist. Its location on the border between Bucharest and Popeşti-Leordeni adds a specific geographic reference to the area’s historical context.

Park and sport fishing

Parcul Erou Garian Alexandru is located in the heart of Popeşti-Leordeni and covers more than 6,000 square metres. Its central location and size add another, landscape-related dimension to the townscape alongside the historic sites.

Balta Floarea Popeștilor is a body of water for sport fishing in Popeşti-Leordeni. It covers five hectares and is between one and six metres deep. If you are considering planning a fishing trip there, check the current usage conditions in advance; for technical planning, you should also verify the measurements again.
