Church architecture, archaeology and agricultural culture offer different ways to explore Slobozia. The themes range from a cathedral with precisely stated measurements to settlement traces from various periods, as well as collections and exhibitions about rural life. You can tailor your stay to the interests that appeal to you most.
Churches and Architectural History
Catedrala EpiscopalÄ din Slobozia can be visited daily and is visible on European route E85 near Slobozia. As visiting conditions may change, check the access information before travelling. Its dimensions also provide a concrete point of reference: the cathedral is 37 metres high, 45 metres long and 24 metres wide. At the apses, its width is 33 metres, and its total area is 850 square metres. The length, height and greater width at the apses describe different dimensions of the same building.
Other churches date from different centuries. Biserica āAdormirea Maicii Domnuluiā in the Bora district dates from 1864. The wooden church Biserica de lemn āSf. Nicolaeā dates from 1748 and was moved to Slobozia from the village of Poiana in the commune of CiulniČa. Its architectural history therefore encompasses not only its age but also its relocation.
The protected historical ensemble MÄnÄstirea āSf. Voievoziā is dated to the 17th to 19th centuries. Matei Basarab is named as the founder of MÄnÄstirea āSfinÅ£ii Voievoziā around 1634. The lower part of the bell tower and the surrounding wall remain from the original foundation. These details link a historical period to specific surviving structures.
Archaeological Traces from Different Periods
The archaeological site of Slobozia lies behind the Bora district, east of the SloboziaāCiulniÅ£a railway line and on the high terrace of the IalomiÅ£a River. The traces described there include a Neolithic settlement of the Boian culture, as well as medieval settlements from the 9th to 11th centuries and from the 17th and 18th centuries.
These periods offer a different way of exploring the past than the churches: they span a Neolithic settlement, the Early Middle Ages and later phases of settlement. Those interested in archaeology can therefore find several historical periods at one site, rather than focusing on a single century.
Agriculture, Exhibitions and Culture
Muzeul Naţional al Agriculturii has more than 8,400 objects. The collection includes agricultural tools and machinery, as well as industrial archaeology, means of transport, ethnography, commemorative culture and ecclesiastical collections. This range presents agriculture as more than a history of tools: mobility, daily life and diverse cultural collections are also represented.
The permanent exhibition āLa pas prin lumea satuluiā presents harvest customs, including the weaving āBarba lui Dumnezeuā, and screens documentaries about these customs. Check the latest exhibition information before your visit, as presentation details may change. The museum also has a 1.7-hectare park with 40 dendrological species. The collection, exhibition and park each have their own focus: objects, traditional customs and dendrological diversity.
Centrul Cultural Ionel Perlea offers exhibitions of paintings and childrenās work, as well as chamber music and symphonic concerts, symposia and conferences. These programme types help visitors plan, although individual events change. A 2022 municipal description identifies PÄdurea PERI as a recreation area with barbecue spots and a space for various festival competitions. Facilities and programme may change, so check the current conditions before visiting. Cultural events and a recreation area therefore offer different options.
