An unusual winter scene and a continuing craft tradition give Vărșag a distinctive character: the Csorgókő Waterfall can freeze in two colors because of minerals in the water, and wooden shingles are still split by hand today. A festival, a lookout tower and local leisure activities are also among the things to discover here.

Landscape and waterfall

Vărșag lies in a volcanic basin in the southern Gurghiu Mountains, at elevations of about 830 to 1,050 metres above sea level. This elevation range, together with the basin and mountain setting, provides the landscape backdrop for a stay. At Csorgókő Waterfall, winter itself is part of the natural spectacle: because of the minerals in the water, it can freeze in two colors.

Csórgókő Waterfall is accessible by a paved road leading to a car park. From there, it is a two-minute walk to the foot of the waterfall. You can plan this short walk from the car park separately from the drive.

Crafts, festival and regional cuisine

Wooden shingles are still split by hand in Vărșag today. This practice is the source of the name “Zsindelyország” (“Land of Shingles”). The craft is therefore not only a historical motif, but a continuing activity that is also reflected in the name.

The Málnaszüret Festival began in 1980 as an event celebrating the traditions of the villages along the Great Târnava River. It takes place on the first weekend of August. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the specific event dates for your travel year.

Regional flavors are also part of what’s on offer: the Medvebarlang restaurant serves traditional flavors from the Odorhei region. Culinary discoveries thus complement the landscape and cultural themes of a stay.

Views and leisure activities

A reconstructed wooden lookout tower stands at Tălașbérce. From there, the view extends across a large part of Vărșag. The tower offers a different way to experience the surroundings than the waterfall: here, the focus is on a broad view over the area.

Mountain Cart - SkiVarsag has a 1,200-metre mountain-cart track in Vărșag. Riders are taken to the top by chairlift. If you plan to make this activity a firm part of your itinerary, check the operating details before your visit, as they may change.

Getting there and choosing when to visit

The usual road route to Vărșag is via county road 138B. It branches off road 138 near the Zetea Reservoir. This sequence of roads helps you plan your journey; as road conditions can change, it is worth checking them before setting off.

Minibuses connect the bus station in Odorheiu Secuiesc with the central area of Vărșag. If you plan to use this connection, check the departure times again before your trip.

Local attractions offer different pointers for choosing your travel dates: the two-colored frost is a possible winter sight, while the Málnaszüret Festival takes place on the first weekend of August. First decide which occasion matters to you, then plan your dates accordingly. If you are traveling for the festival, also confirm the specific event dates.
