Sâncrăieni can be explored through several distinct discoveries: the history of mineral water, wetlands with the dwarf birch and traces of cultural history. These offer concrete ways to choose a destination without reducing the place to a single theme. Nature, local product history and historic buildings and sites each tell a different part of its story.
Wetlands and Protected Area
Mlaștina Borșaroș currently consists of two isolated waterlogged areas: Vízkert (Grădina apei) and Omlásalja (Surpătură). The two areas have their own names and are separated from each other. Mlaștina currently has 20 to 30 specimens of the dwarf birch (Betula humilis), a glacial relict. The term refers to a plant species that dates back to an earlier cold period. This figure is a snapshot: the population may naturally change over time.
Another connection with nature is the Natura 2000 site Bazinul Ciucului de Jos. It covers 2,693 hectares and includes the villages of Sâncrăieni, Sântimbru and Sânsimion. The hydrogeological protection area for the natural mineral water springs in the Sâncrăieni area includes part of this Natura 2000 site. The two areas are therefore specifically connected, but are not the same: the springs' protection area covers only part of the larger site.
Mineral Water as Local History
Natural mineral water from Sâncrăieni was bottled and sold under the Harghita brand starting in 1957; it is now called Tiva Harghita. Perla Harghitei brand mineral water has been bottled in Sâncrăieni since 1974. The dates mark different brand histories: 1957 refers to bottling and sales under Harghita, while 1974 marks the start of bottling Perla Harghitei. This places the local mineral water tradition in context without conflating the histories of the two brands.
Church, Settlement and Chapel
Cultural and historical points of interest include sacred architecture and archaeology. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen in Sâncrăieni has a Romanesque portal. The prehistoric settlement Aşezarea preistorică de la Sâncrăieni - Fabrica de Cărămidă lies on the southern edge of the village. These represent different historical traces: an architectural feature and a named settlement site.
The Úr-kápolna is also located in the Tiva cemetery. Its stone doorframe bears the year 1528. This dated feature provides a different point of reference from the Romanesque portal or the settlement described as prehistoric. Visitors choosing Sâncrăieni for its cultural themes will therefore find several clearly distinct points of interest: a church portal, a prehistoric settlement and a doorframe with an engraved date.
Summer Swimming Facilities
The renovated Borsáros-fürdő welcomes visitors in summer for swimming and relaxation in a pleasant natural setting. Unlike the cultural and historical features, this offering is explicitly seasonal; operations may change. Check before travelling whether the baths will be welcoming visitors during your planned stay.
