A 38-meter-high church tower, medieval fortress and monastery ruins, and the literary traces of Tamási Áron give Comuna Lupeni a multifaceted character. Those who want to combine culture with outdoor activities during their stay will find a range of options here: historic buildings, themed trails, horseback tours and regional cuisine.

Church, Fortress and Roman Tower

The Roman Catholic church in Lupeni was built between 1842 and 1848 in the Neoclassical style on Church Hill, west of the village. Its dimensions help convey its scale: it is 47 meters long and 15.80 meters wide, and the tower reaches a height of 38 meters. Its construction period, style and location together offer a concrete picture of 19th-century church architecture.

An older history can be found at Cetatea Firtoş near Firtuşu: the fortress dates from the 13th century and lies north of the village, near the border with Comuna Corund. The fortified Mănăstirea fortificată de la Firtuşu, a medieval monastery and place of worship, also dating from the 13th century, is located on Dealul Firtoş. Both sites point to medieval architectural and religious history, though they do not need to be combined into a single tour.

The ruins of Turnul roman de la Firtuşu – Péterhegyese represent a different era. They preserve the remains of a Roman watch and signal tower. Alongside the Neoclassical church and medieval structures, they create a contrast in time between Roman military use, medieval fortifications and monastery buildings, and a 19th-century church.

Tamási Áron: Birthplace, Monument and Grave

The Tamási Áron Memorial House is the writer’s birthplace, more than 150 years old. The building was constructed from hewn wood and has a shingle roof. Inside, the house displays furniture and personal belongings, as well as manuscripts, works, letters and photographs. The exhibition thus brings together the building as a birthplace and various records of the writer’s life and work.

The Tamási Áron Monument offers a distinct artistic perspective: sculptors Jenő and Tibor Szervátiusz created it from a rock. The work is three meters high and weighs eight tons. Its figures come from “Énekes madár,” “Ördögváltozás Csíkban” and the Ábel trilogy. The monument draws on motifs from several literary works, while the Memorial House offers insights into the literary record through objects, texts and photographs.

Tamási Áron’s grave is on the western edge of Lupeni, behind the Roman Catholic church and cemetery, in a flower-filled park. Those interested in the writer can distinguish between different forms of commemoration: the birthplace and exhibition, the portrayal of characters from his works, and the grave at a separate site in the village.

Trails, Horseback Tours and Other Activities

In Harghita County, the Via Transilvanica themed trail passes through the communes of Praid, Atia, Atid, Inlăceni and Lupeni. Via Mariae has a different focus: this spiritual pilgrimage route is also open to tourist and sporting use. One section runs from Inlăceni through Firtuşu, Păuleni and Lupeni to Dealu. The distinction is useful when planning: one route is described as passing through several communes, while the other is a pilgrimage route with a specifically described section.

The Lófő Equestrian Center in Lupeni offers horseback tours, sleigh rides and carriage rides. Horseback tours must be booked in advance; booking three to four days ahead is recommended. Confirm the booking details before you travel. Depending on customers’ needs, tours can last from one hour to one week—a wide range that accommodates different schedules, but remains subject to individual arrangements.

At Imperiul Poneilor, children can ride and pet ponies. The offerings also include an exhibition of pony carriages and small animals such as rabbits, chickens, lambs, peacocks, pigeons and pheasants. These pony activities provide another way to spend your time, alongside the trails and horseback tours. The animals and exhibition details describe the venue without specifying a particular visit duration.

The Inima Lui Iisus Statue combines a striking structure with a possible activity: the approximately 22-meter-high statue is made of iron and stainless steel. Visitors can climb an internal metal spiral staircase to the head and enjoy the view from above. This experience differs from the themed and spiritual trails, as well as from the horseback offerings.
