A wet meadow with rare plants, mineral springs and karst formations shapes the opportunities for discovery in Borsec. The Hărmasliget botanical reserve covers about two hectares and lies within the spa resort. Among other plants, the dwarf birch (Betula humilis), a glacial relict, grows there. Borsec is also a place where nature connects with the history of mineral water production and the architecture of a spa resort.

Mineral Springs and Spa Resort Character

The most important mineral springs include Izvorul nr. 3 Boldizsár, Izvorul nr. 5 László, Izvorul nr. 6 Lázár, Izvorul nr. 10 Kossuth, Izvorul nr. 11 Petőfi and Izvorul Pierre Curie. Their names can help you find your bearings as you explore the springs in the area. The mofetta is also part of this theme: the building was rebuilt in 2010 and can accommodate spa treatments and therapies for up to ten people at a time. The mofetta is also called Izvorul Străvechi. Benches, tables, waste bins, fire pits and toilets have been installed along the path from the Round Chair to the mofetta.

For travel orientation, the DN15 is a notable reference point: the road passes through Borsec and connects Transylvania with Moldavia.

Karst Landscape and Trails

A short marked forest trail starts at the edge of the spa resort and leads via the mofetta, also called Izvorul Străvechi, to Peștera de Gheață. The cave lies in the karst area of Dealul Scaunul Rotund, considered Romania’s most significant travertine deposit. Grota Urșilor shows another side of this landscape: its deep, narrow passages were formed by the natural erosion of limestone by seepage water. The karst formation is part of the Scaunul-Rotund complex, a geological and botanical nature reserve covering 40 hectares.

A geotourism walk in Borsec leads to Kerekszék, where the Ice Cave and the Bear Cave can be seen; program details may change. This lets you consider the two caves as specific destinations for exploring Borsec’s karst formations. The geological features sit alongside the Hărmasliget wet meadow: there, the focus is on rare plants and a glacial connection, while the caves and the Scaunul-Rotund complex bring the limestone and travertine landscape to the fore.

Cycling Route and Seasonal Activities

Route 19MN33 is a short half-circuit on the Borsec bypass and is suitable for cycling tourism. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. Access to Baia de Soare is free; a path from the road leads there in about two minutes. Check local conditions before visiting.

The summer toboggan run differs from these nature and route options in its seasonal operating period: it operates between spring and autumn, although the exact opening days may vary. The track is just under 1,500 metres long. An existing ski lift carries passengers to the top. If you are planning a visit, check the specific dates; the seasonal information alone does not provide daily opening hours.

Mineral Water History and Architecture

The Borsec Mineral Water Museum presents the region’s history in connection with the extraction and use of mineral water. Visitors can see more than 100 objects and photographs there, including historic mineral water bottle labels and containers used to transport water 200 years ago. The oldest exhibit is a bottle used to store mineral water at the end of the 19th century. The collection thus offers both an overview of regional mineral water history and tangible objects from different periods.

Several notable buildings form part of the area’s architectural history. Villa 53 Doru is listed as a historic monument; Emil Villa was built in 1938 and is characteristic of Borsec’s spa architecture. The cultural centre is housed in the former Villa Vaitsuk, built in 1902–1903. Its architecture features wrought iron and wood carvings, elements characteristic of historic mountain spa resorts in the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The wooden church of Schimbarea la Față was built between 1844 and 1847 on the site of a church dating from 1718. The former Ó-Sáros bathhouse, dating from the 19th century, is also part of the area’s architectural history.

If you are looking for hotels in Borsec, you can plan your trip around these different highlights: mineral springs and spa resort history, karst landscapes or architecture. For seasonal activities such as the summer toboggan run, and for the trails mentioned, it is worth checking the relevant dates and local conditions before your visit.
