Tismana brings together monastery history and traditional crafts with nature. Two distinctions are useful when planning: the annual fairs take place on fixed dates, while the nature reserve, cave and mountain hiking trail each have their own focus. Depending on whether you are more interested in cultural events, architectural history or nature, you can give these topics different emphasis.
Monastery History and Collections
Tismana Monastery is considered the oldest monastery in Romania. Its construction began two centuries before the arrival of Saint Nicodemus. This places the monastery’s history in a very distant period.
The Tismana Monastery Museum contains old objects from the church and old paintings. Another collection is housed at the Muzeul Costumului Popular Gorjenesc Tismana in the Casa de Cultură „George Coșbuc“ Tismana. It features unique pieces as well as folk costumes from the 19th century.
The collections have different focuses: one centers on objects from the church and paintings, while the other features folk costumes and traditional clothing. Religious history and folk culture thus form distinct aspects of Tismana’s cultural profile.
Fairs and Crafts
Every year on March 25, the Annunciation Fair takes place. Pots and small clay vessels, garden seeds, and willow baskets and chairs are sold there. The goods listed range from pottery and seeds to woven household items, giving the event a tangible connection to everyday life and gardening.
The second annual event is the Assumption of Mary Fair on August 15. On the feast day, performances move to Poiana Sântămăriei near the Şarşori Forest. The two market days therefore differ both in date and in their described focus: goods are listed for the March event, while the August event is described in terms of performances and their location. Check the current program locally before your visit.
Crafts also vary in their materials and products. In the village of Pocruia, experienced craftspeople make traditional wooden vessels and barrels, churns, grain containers and small handcrafted casks. Arta Casnică Tismana is associated with Tismana carpets, rugs, embroidered textiles, shirts, veils, aprons, belts and traditional footwear. Together, these examples show the range from woodwork to textiles and clothing.
Church, Nature Reserve and Cave
The church of Schitul Cioclovina de Sus dates from the 18th century. It is 7 meters long and 3 meters wide and was built from stone, rock fragments and bricks. Archimandrite Spiridon renovated it in 1841. Its construction date, dimensions and materials provide specific points of reference that distinguish this building from the broader history of the monastery.
The Cioclovina Nature Reserve is a 12-hectare botanical protected area of national interest, classified as IUCN Category IV, within the administrative territory of the town of Tismana. It includes rocky meadows where rare whitebeams grow. The focus here is therefore on a clearly defined protected area and its botanical features.
Gura-Plaiului Cave lies north of the village of Topeşti at an altitude of 650 meters. Water formed it in Jurassic-Cretaceous limestone. The cave is 150 meters long and begins with a small shaft 7 meters deep. This is followed by a small chamber and a large chamber, which is 70 meters long and 4 meters high and features abundant stalactite and stalagmite formations. The description combines its geological origins with specific measurements and features of the cave interior.
The Peştişani–Gureni–Cheile Bistriţei–Lacul Vâja–Vârful Oslea–Schiturile Cioclovina–Valea Tismana–Tismana Monastery mountain hiking trail is marked with a red triangle. The listed route continues as far as Tismana Monastery. If you plan to follow this route, check current trail conditions locally.
