A 1924 EGO 4/14 automobile is part of the collection of more than 58,250 cultural assets at the “Teodor Cincu” History Museum in Tecuci, and is considered unique in Romania. This collection is an unusual starting point for a journey of discovery through Galaţi County: museums, memorial sites and monasteries tell different sides of its history, while forests and floodplains offer a very different perspective on the region.
Landscape between plateau and river floodplains
Galaţi County has a plateau-like relief. Based on elevation, position and landforms, five geomorphological units are distinguished: the Covurlui Plateau, the Tecuci Plain, the Covurlui Plain, the Lower Siret Floodplain and the Lower Prut Floodplain. These names illustrate how varied the region’s landscapes are.
A protected natural feature can be found in Pădurea Băneasa forest, between Băneasa and Roşcani: the wild peony grows there, and the forest protects it. In another river landscape lies Lacul Zătun lake, in the Bădălan embanked area on the Danube. It is part of the Lunca Joasă a Prutului Inferior Nature Park.
Lacul Zătun is accessed via the E87 Galaţi–Giurgiuleşti. After crossing the irrigation canal, the paved DJ 251E continues along the Danube flood embankment. Check current road conditions before setting out.
Museums and memorial sites
In Galaţi, the “Casa Cuza Vodă” Museum is housed in the former home of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Its commemorative collections are joined by decorative and visual art, old books and a numismatic collection. In August 2026, the museum was temporarily closed for restoration work. Check whether it has reopened before visiting.
The “Paul Păltănea” History Museum in Galaţi offers another perspective on regional history, displaying artifacts from the Dacian fortress of Piroboridava in Poiana, as well as from the Roman settlement and fort of Tirighina Bărboși. The Museum of History, Culture and Christian Spirituality of the Lower Danube in Galaţi focuses on religion. Its permanent exhibition includes old icons and books, religious objects, paintings and photographs.
Memorial sites also connect individual life stories with cultural heritage. Casa Memorială “Hortensia Papadat Bengescu” is housed in the writer’s birthplace. The “Personalități iveștene” exhibition there contains documentary materials and objects associated with the writer and other prominent figures from Iveşti. Casa Memorială “Costache Negri” is located in a manor house belonging to the Costache Negri family, built in the early 19th century in the style of an evolved Moldavian farmhouse.
Monasteries, crafts and cultural events
The Buciumeni and Vladimirești monasteries offer two concrete examples of the region’s religious architecture. Buciumeni Monastery includes an old church dating from 1840, with an altar from 1700; the complex was declared a historic monument in 1974. At Vladimirești Monastery, the Izvorul Tămăduirii chapel, built in 1939, and the Adormirea Maicii Domnului church, built in 1941, are the highlights of the surviving architectural complex.
Traditional crafts and community culture come together at the “Vatra cu Dor” open-air museum in Galaţi County. Its offerings include workshops in pottery, carpentry, weaving and reed-mat making. The museum also organizes traditional dance and mask-making classes, as well as summer camps for children. Folklore takes center stage at the Festivalul de Folclor “Doina Covurluiului,” an annual event organized by the “Dunărea de Jos” Cultural Center.
The 2026 edition of the Festivalul Scrumbiei Dunărene in Galaţi also has a clear date. The festival featured stalls selling fish, fishery products, dishes made with fresh fish, other food and traditional products. Its program included fish-focused culinary competitions. If you plan to attend the festival, check the latest event dates.
Outdoor activities
For outdoor recreation, the Pădurea Gârboavele forest recreation area offers walks in nature, picnic and barbecue spots, mountain biking and cross-country trails, and an adventure park. Bob & Bike Adrenalina Gârboavele offers several more activities: its two bobsled tracks are more than 1.5 kilometers long in total. The cycling trails include a 2.6-kilometer family route and a 4.3-kilometer competition route. There is also a ten-meter climbing tower, playgrounds, pavilions and a large amphitheater for outdoor events. As operating details and trails may change, check current conditions before visiting.
