Comandău combines its industrial history with specific sites and a distinctly nature-rich setting. The forest railway points to the former timber transport; at the same time, its surviving sections are used for tourism. Planul Înclinat, the village museum and several memorial sites add different aspects of the area’s history. Forests, mountains, a stream and peat bogs give the landscape its own distinct character. When planning your trip, you can therefore first decide whether you are mainly interested in industrial history, local memorial sites, nature or a winter theme.

Landscape and Nature around Comandău

Comandău lies on the Bâsca Mare stream, a tributary of the Buzău. The Nagy-Baszka Valley near Comandău is surrounded by mountains and is described as picturesque; the region is characterized by deciduous and fir forests. The peat bogs near Comandău, considered a natural rarity, are another feature. The landscape thus brings together several specific features: a watercourse, a named valley, forests and bogs. When choosing your trip, you can consider these natural features as a distinct focus alongside the industrial-history sites.

Forest Railway and Industrial History

The Covasna–Comandău forest railway was connected to Covasna railway station in 1892. Its track gauge was 760 millimeters; in the past, it carried timber from the Comandău area to Covasna. The railway can therefore be understood both as a connection and as part of the former timber transport system. The surviving sections between Comandău and Valea Zânelor are now used for tourism. If you are planning a ride, check in advance whether a tourist service is available and when it operates.

Another point of interest in industrial history is Planul Înclinat. The installation was inaugurated in 1890 as a completely ecological system powered by gravity. It is 1,236 meters long and overcomes a height difference of 327 meters. These figures show two different measurements: the length of the installation and the height difference.

Village Museum and Memorial Sites

Micul Castel was built in 1890 as a residence for the center’s director and is a historic monument. Since December 2006, it has housed the Comandău village museum, with exhibits on local history and natural sciences. The building’s former residential function and its later use as a museum bring together architectural and local history.

Two monuments with different historical associations stand in Central Park: one commemorates the heroes of the 1848–1849 Revolution, while the other honors those who fell in the First World War. A memorial plaque on the wall of the former office commemorates the workers’ strike of 1936. Together, these memorial sites span the period from 1848–1849 through the First World War to the 1936 strike.

Winter Activities, Route and Getting There

There is a ski slope on Mount Laur near Comandău. If you are planning to use it in winter, check in advance whether it is operating at the time of your visit.

The route from Comandău to Vârful Lăcăuți initially follows the forest railway for 1.9 kilometers and then crosses the riverbed of the Bâsca Mare. If you are planning to take this route, take the riverbed crossing into account when preparing.

There is also specific information about getting there: a well-maintained forest road leads to Comandău through Valea Zânelor. As road conditions can change, check the conditions before setting out.
