The Mestecănișul de la Reci Nature Reserve lies very close to Bita’s built-up area to the east. The Natura 2000 site ROSCI0111 extends across the territory of Reci Commune and includes the villages of Reci, Aninoasa, Bita and Saciova. This protected landscape includes ponds and small, partly silted-up lakes. It is also home to a diverse range of flora and fauna that are rare in Romania. The connection with nature thus extends beyond the name Bita to include other villages.
Birch Forest Trail and Protected Landscape
The trail through the Mestecănișul de la Reci birch forest is in the vicinity of Bita. It is 5 km long, has an elevation gain of 20 m and takes about an hour and a half on foot or by bicycle. It is suitable for adults and children. At five stations, QR codes display an animated version of the local legend. Horseshoe-shaped markings on trees and signs show the way. The legend thus adds cultural content to the walk. As route conditions can change and trail markers may be maintained or altered, check the current situation before setting out. The QR installation may also be updated.
Lakes and Waterways
North of Bita is a lake that is actually a meander of the Covasna stream. The Reci Lake, in the vicinity of Bita, was created by the artificial damming of the Râul Negru River. A 2020 tourism description calls Reci Lake a well-known place for swimming and fishing. If you plan to enjoy either of these activities, check whether they are currently possible before your visit. The Besenyő stream also flows into the Râul Negru in the Bita area.
Local History at the Cemetery
An old poplar tree stands out at the edge of the cemetery. The fir trees in the cemetery were planted in 1896 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Hungarian nation-state. Bita is also the birthplace of Captain Baikó Lajos, who was born in 1830 and served in the 4th Company of the 83rd Honvéd Battalion. Another biographical connection is to the Szabó family: the graphic artist Gy. Szabó Béla (1905–1985) was a prominent descendant of the family known in Bita. Cemetery details, military history and art history offer different ways to explore local history.
