Valu lui Traian offers several clearly distinct reasons to visit: a botanical nature reserve, archaeological and historical traces, and the recurring Küreş event. When planning an overnight stay, you can first consider whether nature, history or a specific date should shape your visit. Religious sites add to the historical perspective.
Botanical focus and location
The Valul Lui Traian nature reserve is located on the Medgidia Plateau in the northeastern part of Valu lui Traian, near the DN3. The national road connects Murfatlar with Constanța. The state-protected botanical reserve of national interest belongs to IUCN Category III.
Historical traces
The stone wall “Valul de piatră de la Valu lui Traian” is a registered archaeological monument classified as a defence system. It lies about two kilometres south of the village of Valu lui Traian. Its classification gives the monument a clear historical connection.
Another historical trace leads to Constantin Pariano. In 1893, he settled in Hasancea, today’s Valu lui Traian in Constanța County, and acquired a 2,000-hectare estate there. In 1894, he introduced horse racing in Dobruja; the first race was held on his estate in Hasancea. The place, the estate and the early history of horse racing in Dobruja are thus connected through the same person.
Religious sites and archaeological finds
The Church of “Sfinții Apostoli Petru și Pavel” in Valu lui Traian is an old wooden church and is used for liturgical services. The Geamie of Valu lui Traian was founded in 1880. Both sites add religious points of reference to the historical themes.
Numerous pottery fragments were discovered at the Valu lui Traian Est 1 archaeological site, including everyday vessels and amphorae. Building materials were also found, such as roof tiles, hollow bricks and bricks. Anomalies visible in aerial and satellite images probably indicate groups of residential buildings with stone foundations.
Küreş and wine tasting
Traditionally, in early May, Valu lui Traian hosts the opening of the Küreş season in Tatar wrestling. This is a recurring community event supported locally. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the dates and programme before travelling.
Crama Gabai offers wine-tasting packages for groups of five to 15 people. A package includes a vineyard visit, a winery visit, a tasting of five wines, and platters of cheese, cured meats and dried fruit. The group size is a specific planning consideration; confirm the availability of the offer before travelling.
Route connections for planning
The regionally recognised and certified multicultural ecotourism route “From the Roman Fortresses on the Danube Limes to the Greek Cities on the Pontus Euxinus through the Nature Reserves of Dobruja” passes through Valu lui Traian; the locality is listed as a transit location. In addition, the EuroVelo 6 Atlantic–Black Sea corridor passes through the commune of Valu lui Traian. The route connections therefore differ in spatial scope: on the ecotourism route, the locality is listed as a transit location, while on the EuroVelo corridor, the commune is the unit traversed. Check route details before travelling.
