In Eforie Sud, the beach and Black Sea promenade meet a rich local history. You can stroll along the seafront promenade, relax on the beach and swim in the Black Sea. There are also protected natural areas and architectural and cultural monuments that reveal different aspects of the town. When planning your visit, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus on the coast, nature or history.

Beach, Sea and Birdlife

The beach is the obvious focal point for days by the water: Eforie Sud offers walks along the seafront promenade, relaxation on the beach and opportunities to swim in the Black Sea. The name of the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0197 “Plaja submersă Eforie Nord – Eforie Sud” also refers to the coastal area. The site covers 141 hectares in the Black Sea. This places beach visits and a designated marine protected area side by side as distinct aspects of the coast.

Another natural highlight is Lake Techirghiol, which lies on the edge of the Eforie resort. The lagoon covers 10.68 square kilometres, is up to nine metres deep and is separated from the sea by a sandbar. It has been designated a Ramsar site since 2006 and is considered an important bird area. Its waters remain ice-free in winter, and red-breasted geese can spend the night there. The lake thus combines a distinctive landscape with a seasonal natural attraction: birdwatching is particularly relevant in winter, while beach visits and swimming are associated with the Black Sea.

Architectural History and Cultural Monuments

Grădina de Vară Cinemascop is an open-air cinema in Eforie Sud. The building dates from 1958. Grădina Cinemascop operated continuously until the 2000s, after which it closed; it reopened in 2018.

The Eforie Sud Casino also contributes to the town’s architectural history. It is a notable example of maritime Art Deco architecture on the Romanian coast. It was built between 1931 and 1935 as part of a series of buildings intended for summer use. Its construction period and style provide two different points of reference: the former places the casino in time, while the latter describes its architectural significance. Those interested in monuments can also visit the archaeological site of Eforie Sud, which is listed as a historic monument.

The history of the Nașterea SfĂąntului Ioan Botezătorul Church can be traced through two precisely dated events: its foundation stone was laid on 14 June 1913, and it was consecrated on 25 August 1935. The founding of Eforie Sud is associated with an earlier date: the foundation stone of Hotel Movilă was laid in 1899.

Public artworks are also part of the local cultural heritage. The monumental artwork “Decor dobrogean”, created in 1962, is located near Canteen No. 1. That same year, the statue “Tinerețea”, a work by Oniță Iulia, was installed in Eforie Sud. Alongside the historic buildings, these artworks add to the town’s cultural appeal.

Spa Traditions, Cuisine and Getting There

Băile Reci is considered the resort’s main attraction and uses mud from Techirghiol. If this is important to your plans, check the current range of treatments in advance, as offerings may change. Festivalul Pescarilor in Eforie Sud offers a different way to experience local cuisine: its programme includes tasting events and cooking competitions centred on fish and culinary traditions. Programme details may change, so check the latest event information when making specific travel plans.

Gara Eforie Sud railway station is on the Bucharest–Constanța–Mangalia railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable for your travel date. This will help you plan your journey around your interests: the beach and sea are the coastal focus, while cultural monuments, seasonal birdlife and spa traditions offer other ways to experience Eforie Sud.
