The commune of Costinești is designated a tourist resort of national interest. In the resort, the town center, promenade and local cultural history offer different points of interest: the lake and Obelisk, activities by the sea, and the history of festivals, churches and monasteries. For planning, it helps to consider these highlights separately.

Town Center and Activities on the Promenade

Lake Costinești is in the center of the resort, between the main access road, DC6, Strada Tineretului and the main beach. The lake beside the Obelisk is used by excursion boats and recreational boats. The current Obelisk was inaugurated on June 3, 2006, is 18.5 meters high and is considered the resort’s most important tourist attraction.

The Costinești promenade stretches for approximately 1.5 kilometers. The promenade offers opportunities for water sports, bike rides and walks by the sea. For planning, the activities can be distinguished by type: water sports on the one hand, bike rides and walks by the sea on the other.

Beach, Festival and Coastal History

In 2024, Plaja Pescăruș was described as a wild beach in the southern part of the resort; this characterization varies by season.

The first edition of the Beach, Please! festival took place in 2022 on Costinești beach. In 2026, the festival celebrated its fifth edition; Yeat returned to Costinești after performing there in 2024 and 2025.

The ship Evangelia was launched on May 28, 1942. On October 15, 1968, it ran aground about 1.5 nautical miles from the resort’s northern beach, in a stretch of natural cliff known as “Golful francezilor.” The launch and the grounding are two separate events in the history of the same ship.

Churches and Monastery in the Commune

The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Costinești was consecrated on June 22, 2003. Its patronal feast is celebrated on June 24, the feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The two June dates mark different occasions: the consecration of the church and its recurring patronal feast.

Another religious site is in Schitu, a village within the commune of Costinești. The “Sfânta Elena de la Mare” Monastery was rebuilt there; the foundation stone for the new monastic complex was laid on May 14, 1996. The monastery church preserves relics of the holy martyrs Zotic, Atal, Camasie and Filip of Niculițel. The monastery is in Schitu, not in the center of Costinești.

Protected Areas at the Commune Level

The administrative territory of the commune of Costinești overlaps with the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0273 Zona marină de la Capul Tuzla and the Natura 2000 bird protection area ROSPA0076 Marea Neagră. The names distinguish the marine area at Capul Tuzla from the Marea Neagră bird protection area; both overlaps relate to the commune’s administrative territory.
