Vadu brings together religious history, traces of the past preserved in archaeological sites, and the coastal region as distinct travel interests. In Constanța County, the village is among the localities bordering the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. For planning purposes, you can consider these themes separately: the Orthodox parish church, archaeological sites from different periods, and the beaches on the Chituc Grind. This can help you decide whether Vadu suits your trip mainly for its history, coastal landscape, or both.

Church and architectural history

Vadu is home to the Orthodox parish church of Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavriil, dedicated to the holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Construction began during the 1940 population exchange. The dedication and the construction history offer two different perspectives: the dedication indicates the church’s religious connection, while the start of construction places its building history in a specific historical period. The church is therefore a cultural point of reference alongside the archaeological sites, which are distinguished primarily by their respective periods.

Archaeological sites and their periods

The Vadu–Ghiaur–Chioi archaeological site is located on a promontory at the southern end of Lake Sinoe, two kilometres north of the Rare Metals Company. It includes a settlement of the Greco-Getic culture from the La Tène period, dated to the 6th to 4th centuries BC, as well as a medieval necropolis dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. A necropolis is a burial site; here, it therefore belongs to a much later period than the ancient settlement. The dates make the site interesting if you want to compare historical periods: both components belong to the same archaeological site, but not to the same period.

Vadu–Bardalia is another archaeological site and a Roman and Romano-Byzantine settlement. Its Roman phase dates to the 2nd to 4th centuries. Karaharman Fortress provides a later historical context: it is located on the grounds of the Rare Metals Company in Vadu and dates to the Modern Period, from the 17th to 19th centuries. The different place names and dates thus complement one another without describing the same historical period.

Coast and seasonal nature watching

The Vadu–Corbu beaches on the Chituc Grind are considered the only remaining nesting site for the red-wattled lapwing, also known as the Greater Pratincole, in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The birds’ presence and breeding success vary seasonally. A visitor description published in 2021 mentions bird photography as a possible activity in Vadu. If you are planning your trip around bird photography, take seasonal variations into account when setting your expectations.

Getting to the coast

The route to the coast near Vadu starts with a five-kilometre stretch of concrete road, followed by a compacted sand road. The road surfaces therefore change in sequence. As conditions can vary, check the current road conditions before travelling to the coast and include both sections in your plans.
