From the Matia Bell in the churchyard to the Kalotaszeg folk costume worn on holidays, Sâncraiu reveals several facets of its culture and history. The village also has places of remembrance for Ady Endre, an exhibition on village history, and a spot for picnicking at Lake Kőhegy. When looking for a hotel in Sâncraiu, this variety can help you choose what to focus on: culture, village history, or time outdoors.

Kalotaszeg Culture and Local Traditions

Sâncraiu’s Reformed Church houses the Matia Bell, which dates from 1481. It was damaged in 1994 and is now displayed in the churchyard. This object brings together an early date, a later event in its history, and its present-day display.

Sâncraiu’s folk costume comes from the Kalotaszeg region. It combines rich colors with simplicity and clean design, and is worn on holidays and at important events in village life. Its distinctive style and the occasions on which it is worn are both part of the local cultural identity. The Felszeg Gyöngye dance group offers classes in three large groups, with around 80 participants in total, as well as a senior group. Alongside the clothing, organized dance groups are therefore another concrete aspect of the village’s culture.

Places of Remembrance and Village History

A memorial to the poet Ady Endre stands in the kindergarten courtyard, and a statue of the same poet is located in the school courtyard. The two places of remembrance are thus dedicated to the same literary figure but are situated in different parts of the village. Another perspective is offered by the cellar exhibition “Trecutul comunității noastre în imagini” (“The Past of Our Community in Pictures”). It illustrates various aspects of Sâncraiu’s history, adding a distinct focus alongside the places of remembrance for Ady Endre.

The Szüreti bál

During the Szüreti bál, young couples of harvest guards ride in a striking procession through the village, singing as they go. The men ride on horseback, while the women travel in a horse-drawn wagon. Participants wear traditional costumes from Kalotaszeg and sing folk songs from the same region. Kalotaszeg folk costume is therefore seen not only on holidays and at important events in village life, but also in this procession. The contrast between the riders and the wagon makes the festival’s course especially vivid.

Picnicking, Crafts, and Cycling

If you would like to spend some time outdoors alongside your cultural activities, Lake Kőhegy near Sâncraiu offers a place to picnic. For handmade goods, Izvoru Crișului is another destination: it is 12 km from Sâncraiu. Roadside stalls and small shops along the E60 sell handmade textiles, woodcarvings, and ceramics. This location detail is useful for planning, since these goods are associated with Izvoru Crișului, while the lake and the cultural places of remembrance mentioned above appeal to other interests.

There are also specific route details to help plan a cycling trip. A cycle path more than 12 km long includes a 3 km section near Bánffyhunyad and a 5 km section near Călățele. The latter section was added in August 2025. The two sections mentioned add up to 8 km, so they should not be confused with the cycle path’s total length of more than 12 km.
