Râșca is ideal for an excursion combining monastery architecture, local culture and trails through the mountain landscape. Cultural highlights range from the Mănăstirea Râșca Transilvană Monastery to the school museum in Râșca de Sus; hikes take you through the Comuna Râșca and its named landscape areas. When choosing what to see, consider whether you are more interested in architectural history, local traditions or a longer stretch outdoors.
Monastery architecture and cultural history
A church description dated October 14, 2023, places the monastery at an altitude of about 1,200 meters in the Apuseni Mountains, near the Beliș-Fântânele Dam. It is located within the administrative areas of the communes of Râșca and Călățele, near Lake Fântânele-Beliș. The monumental church was built between 2003 and 2018. It follows the classical forms of the Moldavian style and features Neo-Byzantine frescoes painted using the fresco technique: the paintings are applied to fresh plaster. Râșca is also one of the passage points on the wooden churches route in Cluj County.
Another way to explore local history is to visit the museum in Râșca de Sus. The former school was turned into a museum and is protected as part of the national cultural heritage. It is housed in a traditional wooden building with carved beams. Preserved items include wooden benches, drawings on the walls, schoolbooks and notebooks. Alongside the imposing monastery church, traces of everyday school life also feature in the area’s cultural history.
Hiking and planning your time
A circular hiking trail in the Comuna Râșca was described in October 2023 as approximately 12.5 kilometers long and easy in difficulty. It runs mostly through the commune, passes through a section of the Someșul Cald Gorge and then climbs toward Dealul Mare in Râșca. The trail follows the ridge of Dealul Pietrelor to six consecutive viewpoints. The route therefore combines a gorge, a climb and several viewpoints in one loop. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Two other route names with stated durations are Fântânele–Iancului Cross and Fântânele–Gorge Entrance. The first route is listed as taking two hours, with an easy difficulty level and blue dot trail markings; the second takes four hours, also has an easy difficulty level and is marked with red dots. The difference between two and four hours gives you a concrete basis for planning your time. Hiking is also possible on marked trails in the Comuna Râșca. Before setting out, check whether the trail conditions and markings are clear and up to date on site.
Mountain scenery and activities near Fântânele
The Comuna Râșca lies on the northern side of the Apuseni Mountains, more precisely in the Gilău Mountains, between the Someșul Cald and the first tributaries of the Crișul Repede. Rounded mountain ridges and smooth, sometimes gently undulating uplands contrast with deeply cut valleys and steep slopes. Valea Fericirii is a section of the valley that crosses the Comuna Râșca and stretches for about 40 kilometers in the north of the commune. This description of the landscape draws attention both to the open uplands and to the striking valleys.
There are hiking opportunities around Stațiunea Fântânele. The area also has a ski slope and opportunities for water sports on the lake, with boats or pedal boats. As providers and facilities may change, check in advance which activities are available when you visit. Hiking, winter sports and water activities suit different travel plans, so the season and the activities you want to enjoy are important factors in your decision.
