In Mărişel, you can choose hikes by duration and landscape and combine them with insights into local village culture. The trails range from routes of around an hour to longer circuits. A notable landmark is the Țâcla Gavrii rock face; the Muzeul Satului Mărișel is dedicated to traditional objects and crafts.
Choose Hiking Trails by Time and Landscape
The Fântânele–Quarry and Fântânele–Iancului Cross trails offer a practical comparison for planning your time. The yellow-marked Fântânele–Quarry trail takes about an hour, while the blue-marked Fântânele–Iancului Cross trail takes about two hours. Both are rated easy. The red-marked Fântânele–Gorge Entrance route is also rated easy; allow about four hours for it. These times are approximate, and trail conditions may vary. Check them before setting out.
The Circuitul Țâcla Gavrii loop is about four kilometres long, with roughly 300 metres of elevation gain. It starts at the Țâcla car park, passes through a wooded area and reaches the Țâcla Gavrii viewpoint. Țâcla Gavrii is a very high rock face above a large forested area. From the summit, you can see distant mountains and the scattered houses of Măguri Răcătău.
For a longer loop, consider the Rusești–Dâlboacă–Colții Șoimului–Rusești route: it is about 12.5 kilometres long, with roughly 700 metres of elevation gain. The starting point is in the hamlet of Rusești, in the commune of Mărişel. The route passes through a section of the Someșul Cald gorge and over a plateau and ridge with six viewpoints overlooking the Gilău Mountains. This makes it possible to consider the approximate distance and landscape features together when choosing a route.
A 2021 route report also describes a yellow-marked loop that starts near the church in Mărişel, passes through the forest to Trei Pâraie and offers views of the Leșu Valley along the way. Three watermills and rest areas have been set up at Trei Pâraie. Check their condition on site.
Village Culture and Seasonal Experiences
The Muzeul Satului Mărișel displays traditional objects that are more than 150 years old, including a loom dating from 1906. Visitors can also learn about hemp processing there. The museum thus brings together older household objects and a specific craft tradition.
The traditional Mărişel costume for men includes cioareci woven from wool or hemp, a cămașă and a suman. The women’s costume includes zadie, poale, ie and suman. The celebration at Crucea Iancului takes place every year on the second Sunday in July. This is distinct from Crucea lui Avram Iancu, a historic monument in the Fântânele area of the commune of Mărişel.
If winter sports are part of your plans, the Mărișel Copcea ski area has three slopes of varying difficulty. Check seasonal operations before making plans. This keeps choosing a slope as a separate part of your plans, alongside hiking and village culture.
