When planning a stay in Băișoara, you can focus on nature trails or cultural history. The Muntele Mare protected area, the Sfântul Prooroc Ilie Tesviteanul Monastery, the Orthodox Church and traditional crafts provide specific points of interest.

Nature Trails and Routes

The ROSCI0119 Muntele Mare Natura 2000 protected area was designated in 2007 and is crossed by two tourist trails. A description published in January 2020 names the nearby Stațiunea Muntele Băișorii as a starting point for tourist trails of varying difficulty. If you plan to take these trails, check the current trail conditions locally.

Another route description outlines a 60-kilometre circuit: it connects Băișoara, St. Băișoara, Buscat, Muntele Boinic and Ocolișel, then returns to Băișoara. The two trails relate to the protected area, while the circuit describes a connection between several named places. This makes it easier to distinguish between trails within the protected area and a longer loop with multiple stops.

Monastery and Orthodox Church

The final location of the Sfântul Prooroc Ilie Tesviteanul Monastery was decided in 1994. The following year, a temporary wooden church and two monks’ cells were built with the help of the faithful. The monastery’s annual patronal feast is celebrated on 20 July. The early stages of construction and the recurring feast day give the monastery’s history both a timeline and a specific place in the annual calendar.

The Orthodox Church in Băișoara is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. Its foundation stone was laid on 14 September 1991, and it was consecrated on 9 September 2001. One distinctive detail is the interior painting: it is based on freehand drawings rather than stencils. Alongside the building’s history, this highlights its artistic execution and religious dedication.

Traditional Crafts and Cultural Events

The Vâltoarea din Băișoara is one of the few traditional installations of its kind still in operation. Mountain water is channelled through a wooden trough into a large basin made of logs. Its operation can be understood through its specific components: the water supply, trough and basin all work together.

Descriptions from 2016 mention a small workshop run by an association, where women hand-weave carpets, bags, tablecloths and other traditional products typical of the region. They also mention creative workshops for adults and children’s groups focused on old, authentic rural arts and crafts. If you are planning to visit or take part, confirm locally whether the workshop and activities are currently running and accessible.

“Ziua Comunei Băișoara” is also associated with a cultural event organised by the commune. The 20th edition of Serbările Zăpezii took place from 8 to 11 February 2024. These are different points of reference in time: an annual patronal feast on 20 July and a specifically dated winter event from 2024.

In the Săcel area of Băișoara commune, ruins can be seen at the site known as “Cetate.” According to local tradition, they are attributed to Voivode Gelu. Understanding this attribution as local tradition preserves the distinction between the visible site and its interpretation passed down through the generations.

Getting There and Choosing the Right Location

The access road to Stațiunea Muntele Băișorii branches off the DJ 107M in Băișoara. It runs 10 kilometres along the Ierța Valley to the village of Muntele Băișorii, then continues for a further 8 kilometres to the resort. Along the way, you pass through Băișoara, then the village, and finally Stațiunea Muntele Băișorii.
