About one kilometre east of Rădaia, an archaeological site lies on Orat Hill. A second Neolithic settlement is located beyond the Rădaia railway stop in Baciu commune. The two sites have different names and locations. There are also traces of the area’s earlier history, distinctive rock and natural areas nearby—different points of reference for understanding Rădaia and its surroundings.
Archaeology and Local History
The Rădaia–Orat archaeological site lies on Orat Hill, about one kilometre east of the village. It is near the historic Napoca–Porolissum Imperial Road. The hill and approximate distance provide a concrete geographical reference; the Imperial Road is part of the historic landscape, not a description of a present-day route.
Beyond the Rădaia railway stop in Baciu commune lies the Neolithic settlement of Rădaia–“La Haltă”. It is a separate archaeological site, not another name for the site on Orat Hill. The village’s name has also changed: Rădaia was formerly known as Poșta Merei. Historically, the village lay on the main connecting road between the central and northern parts of Transylvania.
Rock and Earlier Uses
A quarry is located in the upper part of Rădaia, where residents used to extract stone. The rock from the Rădaia area is darker than that from Viștea and is suitable for houses and stables. These details connect a specific part of the village with the rock’s former use and its described applications.
Landscapes in the Surrounding Area
Near Rădaia are the Cheile Baciului, a mixed nature reserve of national interest covering about three hectares. The landscape features of Cheile include limestone escarpments, rocky areas and fossil deposits, as well as mixed-forest, meadow and rock vegetation. Here, rock formations and different types of vegetation occur side by side.
There is also a two-hectare fossil site near Corușu, in the Rădaia area. It is a natural monument of palaeontological value, where fossilised seashells can be found. The figures offer a comparison of scale: the fossil site covers two hectares, while Cheile Baciului covers about three.
Further afield is Hoia-Baciu mixed forest, which covers approximately three square kilometres. Its trees include oaks, hornbeams, Turkey oaks, pines and hazels. Field mice, squirrels, wild boars, bats and owls also live there. The composition may vary seasonally.
Culture and Activities
The Muzeul Bivolului Mera is located in the village of Mera in Baciu commune. It is a named cultural site near Rădaia; if you plan a visit, check the opening hours in advance. The northern part of Cheile Baciului is considered suitable for shorter climbing trips. The terrain there is rocky and steep.
