Oravița brings together theater and railway history, Baroque religious architecture and a historic waterworks complex. Travelers can explore cultural, architectural and engineering history as distinct areas of interest.

Theater, Museums and the History of Pharmacy

Teatrul Mihai Eminescu is Romania’s first theater; its building houses a museum featuring elements of local culture. Teatrul Vechi Mihai Eminescu is a historical and architectural monument with elements of the late Baroque or Viennese Baroque. The Muzeul de Etnografie, Etnologie și Folclor „Țara Carașului“ is a permanent exhibition unit of the Centrul Cultural „Teatrul Vechi Mihai Eminescu“.

Farmacia muzeu Knoblauch is considered the first mining-region pharmacy in Banat and the Romanian cultural sphere. The Muzeul de Istoria Farmaciei Montanistice Bănăţene preserves a documentary archive and a library of old books. The history of pharmacy therefore encompasses both its early significance and specific archival collections.

Churches and Urban Monuments

Biserica Romano-Catolica din Oravița is a historical monument built between 1718 and 1722 in the provincial Baroque style. Biserica ortodoxă ADORMIREA MAICII DOMNULUI is a historical monument dating from 1781; it was built between 1781 and 1784 in the Baroque style. Its iconostasis was made in Vienna. The construction dates and style descriptions allow for a direct comparison of the two churches.

Primăria veche is a historical monument dating from 1796. It was originally built as the seat of the „Administrația Monetară şi Minieră“ for the Imperial Banat. Cazarma grănicerească is a historical monument dating from 1747. Together, these buildings represent different chapters in the town’s history; in the case of Primăria veche, its former administrative function is explicitly part of that history.

Railways and Waterworks

Oravița railway station was completed in 1847 as Romania’s first railway station and is a starting point for the Oravița–Anina railway line. The line dates from 1863 and is Romania’s first mountain railway. It is also a Class A historical monument and a masterpiece of engineering. If you plan to travel on the line, check the current timetable beforehand.

The Lacul Mare–Lacul Mic hydrotechnical complex was built between 1727 and 1733 along the middle course of the Oravița Valley. It includes some of Romania’s oldest waterworks and its first gravity dams. The complex was intended for both use by local industry and recreation for residents. The history of waterworks thus complements the railway as a second engineering topic, with its own dates and function.

Landscape

The Cheile Nerei-Beușnița National Park includes areas within the administrative territory of Oravița. Alongside theater, architecture and engineering history, this broadens the range of topics to include nature conservation.
