Cuza Voda offers two perspectives for planning your trip: the wetland landscape of Iezerul Călărași and the village’s history. Lake Iezer is of natural origin. Cultural history ranges from a memorial plaque to the founding of the commune. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide whether nature, history or an event date should shape your stay.

Wetland and bird protection

The Iezerul Călărași protected area is a lowland wetland with open water, flowing waters, lakes, marshes, reed beds, meadows and agricultural land. The area provides conditions for migratory and passage birds, including rare and legally protected species, to breed, feed and stay. The focus is therefore not only on open water: the other habitats also shape the wetland’s ecological character.

The Iezerul Călărași nature reserve has been protected under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance since July 2012. The Natura 2000 site ROSPA0051 Iezerul Călărași is a special protection area for birds. It is located within the administrative territories of Cuza Voda commune (21%), the city of Călărași (15%) and Grădiștea commune (2%).

A cycling tourism route runs in the immediate vicinity of the Natura 2000 site. This offers two ways to view the landscape: as a habitat for birds and as a reference point on a cycling tourism route. The route and the protected-area landscape are distinct aspects of the nature theme.

Memorial site, church and village history

The memorial plaque “Monumentul eroilor căzuţi în Al Doilea Război Mondial” commemorates 128 people who fell in the 1944–1945 war. The monument consists of a white marble slab on a four-tiered base; its edges are decorated with botanical and floral motifs. The figures and dates give the memorial site a clear historical context.

The “Biserica Sf. Ioan Botezătorul” church in Cuza Voda was built between 1907 and 1914 and painted in 1912. The painting period thus falls within the construction period. The village’s history can also be dated: Cuza Voda was founded through the allocation of land to farmers, which began in 1899.

Seasonal culture

The “Zilele Comunei Cuza Vodă” takes place every year in summer. If you would like to plan your trip around these commune days, check the specific event date in advance. A tourism strategy published in September 2023 also describes a performance of the folk theatre play “Jienii” in the village of Cuza Vodă during the winter holidays; its main character is Iancu Jianu. The timing therefore differs: the commune days are said to follow an annual summer schedule, while the description of “Jienii” places it during the winter holidays.

Road connections for orientation

National road DN3 runs through Cuza Voda commune and connects Călărași with Bucharest. County road DJ306 branches off near Ceacu and connects the commune northwards with Dragoș Vodă, where it joins DN3A. If you are travelling by car, these road connections help you place Cuza Voda within the regional route network: one connects Călărași and Bucharest, while the other heads north towards Dragoș Vodă and DN3A.
