Focul Viu near Terca, the “Valurile de piatră” at the village entrance and the “7 Locuri de Poveste” Museum give Lopătari distinct points of interest, spanning nature and culture. When planning your visit, the locations matter: the Focul Viu natural monument lies within the village of Terca, while the Valurile de piatră and the museum are in Lopătari.

Fire and Rock Formations

Focul Viu is a natural monument within the village of Terca, in the commune of Lopătari. Gases that continuously escape from the ground produce a flame about 0.5 metres high. At night, the yellowish-red fire can be seen from several hundred metres away.

At the entrance to Lopătari are the “Valurile de piatră”: wave-shaped rock ridges bearing traces of waves, dated to around 16 million years ago. Unlike the gas-fuelled fire, the focus here is on the shape of the rocks. The Malul Roșu nature reserve is also near Lopătari.

Routes Through the Landscape

Routes and roads run along both slopes of Culmea Ivănețu. They directly connect the tourist areas of interest in Lopătari and Aluniș with the Siriu, Penteleu and Podul Calului massifs. Unlike a single natural site such as Focul Viu, the focus here is on a network linking several areas and massifs.

Stories and Crafts

The “7 Locuri de Poveste” Museum in Lopătari opened in 2016 and explores stories and legends from Ținutul Buzăului. Its themes include dragons, giants and man-eaters, as well as protective spirits, magical stones and unusual remedies. Its subject matter ranges from fantastical beings to ideas of protection and healing; the museum is devoted to a rich body of stories rather than a single legend.

In Lopătari, craftspeople make musical instruments such as flutes and bagpipes using traditional methods passed down from generation to generation. In contrast to the stories explored by the museum, this highlights another form of cultural transmission: knowledge of how to make instruments. The name Lopătari is also associated with wooden shovels made by local craftspeople for the princely court and Vintilă Vodă Monastery near the village. This historical craft tradition adds another connection to the village’s history alongside the inherited methods of instrument-making.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The 2014–2020 local development strategy identifies county road DJ 203 K as the main transport link for the commune of Lopătari. It runs east and south along the Slănic River, passing through Mânzălești and Cernătești before continuing to Mărăcineni, near the city of Buzău. To the west, the strategy describes a difficult and impractical route to Gura Teghii. The road connection and the routes on Culmea Ivănețu offer different ways to find your way: the former follows the Slănic towards Buzău, while the latter connect tourist areas with the massifs.
