A view from Vârful Zăpodia over the Buzău Valley, trovants along a spring-fed stream and a Neolithic settlement give Cozieni a distinctive profile. The commune is one of the 18 communes in the Ținutul Buzăului UNESCO Geopark. When looking for a holiday apartment here, the first question is whether you want to focus on landscape and geology or on archaeological and ecclesiastical history.

Landscape and geology

The Sferele de la Cozieni are located near Bârza Forest; Vârful Zăpodia lies at the upper end of the same forest. The summit offers panoramic views over the Buzău Valley. These are two distinct landscape landmarks: Bârza Forest provides the location reference for the Sferele, while Vârful Zăpodia offers views into the valley. If you want to focus primarily on the panorama, head for the summit; the Sferele offer a geological attraction in their own right.

The Fața lui Nan trovants are located along a spring-fed stream in the village of Fata lui Nan. The Cocârceni trovants are smaller and considered spectacular. A natural stone wall with fossilized shell fossils lies on the Colțeni ridge. The locations distinguish these features: a spring-fed stream in Fata lui Nan, smaller formations in Cocârceni and fossils on the Colțeni ridge. The Punga trovants are associated with the legend of Dochia; here, local lore adds to the geological theme.

Archaeology, buildings and local lore

The Bălănești–Pe poduri settlement belongs to the Neolithic Gumelnița culture. It is located in the administrative area of Cozieni, in the village of Bălănești. The churches add further dates and construction styles. The wooden church of Sfinții Voievozi in Bălănești dates to 1839. The Church of Saint Martyr Theodore Tiron in Cocârceni dates to 1819 and is built of masonry and wood. In Cozieni, the Church of Adormirea Maicii Domnului is associated with the period 1903–1913. Another church of the same name at the former Mărculești site is dated to 1834; Mărculești was later incorporated into Bălănești. The different locations thus highlight different construction dates and architectural features.

The collection of Virgil Bâgiu in the hamlet of Teișu, Cozieni commune, is another cultural point of interest. It included hundreds of objects that had once been useful to the collector’s ancestors. This connection to objects from everyday life in the past adds a different perspective on the commune’s history alongside the Neolithic settlement and churches. Together, archaeology, buildings and local lore offer different ways to explore Cozieni and its villages.

Choosing what to focus on

When looking for holiday apartments in Cozieni, you can think in advance about what you want your stay to focus on: panoramic views, the variety of geological features or the history of individual places. If several of these interest you, Cozieni can be explored through both its landscapes and its archaeological and historical connections.
