Ciuta brings together cultural history and a distinctive landscape along the Buzău Valley. Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul stands at a road junction and viewpoint; it is also where two tourist routes end. Together with the church and the peak of Cetățuia, these offer different focal points for a stay: historic buildings, valley views, or connections to the routes.

Church, Monument and Sculpture

The church “Intrarea în Biserică a Maicii Domnului” was founded or built in Ciuta on August 2, 1762. In the cemetery of Ciuta, in front of the church “Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică,” stands a cross-shaped monument with a statue of a soldier lost in thought.

For travelers interested in architecture and sculpture, these offer two different perspectives on Ciuta: a church building with a specific date and a figurative monument.

The Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul monument commemorates the 375th anniversary of Mihai Viteazul’s march through the Buzău Valley toward Transylvania. It is a concrete monument about 15 metres long, clad in shell limestone.

The biography of sculptor Vasile Ștefănoiu also leads to Ciuta: he was born here and grew up among stonemasons who supported artists at the Măgura sculpture workshop. Stone from the Ciuta–Măgura quarry area was used for the sculptures at the Măgura open-air museum, which is administratively located in Tisău. In the commune of Măgura, alongside farming, stonemasonry and pottery were also among the residents’ crafts. Stone and sculpture thus appear in several regional contexts, from Ștefănoiu’s biography to the choice of material for the museum’s sculptures.

Valley, Peak and Routes

The peak of Cetățuia on Dealul Ciolanu rises 631.7 metres above Ciuta. Near Ciuta, the Buzău Valley, or Buzău River, depression corridor begins as a gorge-like valley narrows 300 to 500 metres wide. From a viewpoint near Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul, the view stretches far across the Buzău Valley.

The tourist route through Valea Nișcovului leads to Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul in Ciuta. It follows the DJ 203G from Haleș toward Ciuta as far as the junction with the DN10 Buzău–Brașov, where the monument also stands. Check the route before setting out, as road conditions may change due to construction work.

Another route connection is the Drumul turistic al Cramelor wine route. The fountain is one of its endpoints; the other is in Pietroasele. The two routes therefore differ in their orientation: the route through Valea Nișcovului leads to a specific destination in Ciuta, while the wine route names two endpoints, one of them Pietroasele.
