Balta Albă combines the landscape of a shallow salt lake with important bird habitats and a long spa history. This offers different ways to plan your trip: nature and bird migration, or the spa town’s historic connections.

Lake and Protected Areas

Lake Balta Albă lies in the Râmnic Plain, immediately south of the highway between Râmnicu Sărat and Brăila. It is brackish, shallow and eutrophic. A fluviatile liman, it formed when alluvial deposits dammed an old bed of the Râmnic at its confluence with the Buzău. Balta Albă is a salt lake with a maximum depth of four metres; it does not freeze over in winter. The lake is associated with nutrient-rich organic therapeutic mud.

The 1,167-hectare Balta Albă Nature Reserve is of geological and zoological significance. It encompasses a natural salt lake as well as surrounding peatlands and meadows. The lake, wetlands and meadows give the landscape its natural character; the reserve’s name refers to more than just the open water.

Waterbirds are important in the Balta Albă–Amara–Jirlău area both during the breeding season and on migration. At least 20,000 waterbirds regularly pass through the area. It is classified as a globally significant area for biodiversity. The ROSPA0004 Balta Albă-Amara-Jirlău Special Protection Area serves as a feeding and resting ground for Red-breasted Geese during their winter migration. It is also important for breeding populations of Eurasian Bitterns, Purple Herons and Ferruginous Ducks. Winter migration and breeding occurrences represent different seasonal aspects of this birdlife.

Spa History and Literature

The use of sapropelic mud at Lake Balta Albă dates back at least to 1840. Dumitru Seceleanu laid the foundations for the spa resort by having treatment rooms and the first facilities for treating rheumatic diseases built. The first hotel was built in Balta Albă in 1872; warm and cold baths opened shortly afterwards. Research by Carol Davila confirmed the therapeutic properties of the local healing mud. These details describe the historical spa tradition, not a treatment service available today.

The region is also connected with the literature of Vasile Alecsandri: Balta Albă inspired his novella of the same name, published in 1848 in the journal Calendarul Albinei. For those interested in the area’s cultural history, this offers a literary connection alongside its spa tradition, dating back to the same period in the 19th century.
