Vulcan offers two distinct ways to plan a stay: the fortified Evangelical church, with its Romanesque and Gothic features, and a hike from Vulcan to Zărnești. The church brings together details from several centuries; the route is approximately 15 kilometres long. This raises a practical question for your plans: would you like to set aside time for architectural history, or should the hike shape your day?
Romanesque and Gothic features
The triumphal arch of the Romanesque basilica dates from the 13th century, while the Gothic choir was built in the 15th century. The choir contains a stone ribbed vault supported by corbels decorated with masks. These details give the architecture different layers of scale: the arch points to the older Romanesque structure, while the choir, vault and corbels define its Gothic design. A ribbed vault is structured by intersecting stone ribs; the corbels are the supporting elements bearing the mask decoration.
Another precisely dated feature is the baptismal font from 1741. It bears inscriptions in Latin and German, which are also mentioned in an 18th-century church register. This links a dated object with two languages and a written reference from the same period. Taken together, the dates of the architectural and decorative features span the 13th to the 18th century.
Fortifications, cemetery and history
The fortifications have their own history, too. The enclosing wall dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. Its fortified entrance had a drawbridge or portcullis, as well as a machicolation. The church was completely devastated by Tatars in 1611 and restored in 1665. The Evangelical cemetery lies behind the church. Its burial chambers are arranged along the edge under a shared roof.
Directions and keys
The complex is in the centre of Vulcan, at Strada Principală No. 1, right next to the town hall. The location of the main entrance is important for finding your way: it is obscured by the town hall building. The keys to the fortified Evangelical church are held at the Evangelical Parish Office in Vulcan. If you are planning to visit the interior, you can ask there about access.
Hiking to Zărnești
The hiking trail from Vulcan to Zărnești is approximately 15 km long. A hiking description from 2026 characterises it as having no technical or steep sections. These details answer different planning questions: the distance gives the length of the route, while the description outlines its terrain. If you want the hike to shape your day, you can weigh both against the rest of your travel plans.
If you would like to include both, decide how much of your stay to devote to the hike and the church’s architecture.
