The fortified church of Sânpetru and the Dealul Lempeș botanical nature reserve represent two distinct aspects of Petersberg: defensive architecture and protected landscape. At the church, the oval layout, the orientation of the choir and bell tower, and the chapel with its wall paintings define the character of the ensemble. In the nature reserve, the botanical designation, its area and the protected fauna are central. The Via Transilvanica and the local event Sânpetru cu bun gust are additional interests to consider when planning your trip.

The fortified church of Sânpetru

The ensemble includes an oval fortified enclosure. The choir faces west, while the bell tower stands to the east. In the northern part is a pre-Reformation chapel decorated with valuable wall paintings dating to around 1400. The different structural elements and their positions can thus be distinguished within the ensemble: chapel, church, tower and fortifications.

The inner defensive wall also has an oval ground plan. It is 8 metres high and features loopholes and openings for pouring pitch, which clearly illustrate its defensive function. The building history distinguishes the present-day church from its medieval predecessor: the medieval church was demolished in 1794, and the fortified church was completed in 1797. The ensemble thus brings together the chapel with its paintings dating to around 1400 and a church building completed later.

Dealul Lempeș: Nature Reserve and Landscape

The Dealul Lempeș botanical nature reserve lies on the hill also known as Dealul Cetății, within the administrative areas of the communes of Hărman and Sânpetru. It covers 274.5 hectares and is classified as a protected area of national interest under the name Dealul Cetății–Lempeș. The botanical designation was prompted by postglacial xerothermic plant communities—that is, heat- and drought-loving vegetation. Protected fauna includes specimens of the common buzzard, the lesser spotted eagle and the deer. The hill’s two names and the reserve’s formal designation help distinguish between the different names.

Understanding Routes and Activities

A section passing through the commune of Sânpetru was reported on 7 August 2024 as an approved addition to the Via Transilvanica. The Via Transilvanica as a whole is intended for hiking, cycling or horseback riding. These forms of travel apply to the route as a whole. If you would like to include the section through Sânpetru in your plans, check the current route before travelling.

A municipal tourism text dated 27 March 2009 describes the Dealul Lempeș–Sânpetru area as a suitable place for paragliding. If you are planning this activity, check the current take-off and operating conditions in advance. This keeps the older information clearly separate from what applies to a specific travel date.

Local Event

In 2025, Sânpetru cu bun gust was planned as a monthly event. It brought together local producers, craftspeople and community members. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the current event calendar in advance.
