High-altitude areas between two mountain ranges
The commune of Fundata lies in the Rucăr-Bran corridor between the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului mountain ranges. It occupies the upper levels of the Bran Plateau, at elevations of 1,200 to 1,300 metres. Some homes are located above 1,300 metres and even at 1,400 metres. These elevation figures refer to the commune, not just the village. Another elevation marker is the sports base at the Cheile-Grădiștei Resort Fundata: it lies at 1,300 metres and is used for training camps and national and international competitions.
Cycling loop or hiking connection
Piatra Craiului National Park’s red cycling loop No. 11 runs from Dâmbovicioara via Podu Dâmboviței, Valea Cheii, Fundățica, Fundata, Șirnea and Ciocanu, and back to Dâmbovicioara. Fundata is therefore on a loop that passes through several places and returns to its starting point. Hiking route 01MN30 follows a different course: it connects Fundata village with Cabana Padina, passing over Muntele Bucșa and by Refugiul Strunga. Activities at the Cheile-Grădiștei Resort
The Cheile-Grădiștei Resort Fundata offers several different activities. The Alpine Coaster is approximately 1.6 kilometres long and has two spectacular uphill sections. It is intended for adults and children aged three and over. Children between three and seven may ride only with an adult; this age rule is important when planning a ride together. The adventure park offers tree climbing on varied courses.
Biathlon is also available at the resort: the Cheile-Grădiștei complex in Fundata is home to Romania’s only internationally homologated biathlon arena. The resort’s sports base is used for training camps and national and international competitions. The coaster, adventure park and biathlon arena thus represent different aspects of the place, from a specific leisure activity to organised competitive sport.
Local history and culture in the commune
Historically, Fundata lay on the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Wallachia. Fundata was also the first locality liberated by Romanian troops. In Fundata village, in the commune of Fundata, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God (“Adormirea Maicii Domnului”) is dated to 1843.
In Șirnea, the flame is traditionally lit every year on 23 June for Olympic Day at the Nicolae-Frunteș Museum; individual programme items may vary. The traditional “Măsura Laptelui” festival is also associated with Șirnea. At its 57th edition in 2026, it featured traditional food, folk music, scenes of everyday life and shepherding games. The location details help distinguish these cultural attractions: the church and museum are not in the same village.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
Road access to Fundata is from Brașov or Pitești via the E574. The roads in the area pass through mountainous terrain with hairpin bends. Take these winding roads into account when planning your route.
