Cincșor brings together a fortified church with several construction phases, a former Evangelical parish house and numerous well-preserved traditional Saxon homesteads. At the same time, the village lies on flat terrain surrounded by hills on three sides and opening southwards towards the Făgăraș Mountains. Architectural history and landscape thus offer two distinct reasons to stay. Visitors choosing Cincșor can focus on medieval architecture, preserved farmsteads or the village’s setting in the landscape.

Fortified Church and Architectural History

The Evangelical church was built in the Gothic style in 1421 on the foundations of an older church dating from the 13th century. In the 15th century, it was fortified with two defensive walls, into which stones from an older Roman fort were incorporated. The defensive walls have four towers. The building’s history can therefore be read in three stages: the older church in the 13th century, the Gothic building in 1421 and the fortifications in the 15th century.

The Samuel Mätz organ in Cincșor was used by a musical group for one of its pieces. Summer in Cincșor is also associated with organ music in the church.

The former Evangelical parish house is the oldest building in Cincșor after the fortified church and dates from the 16th century. One of its rooms contains Transylvanian Renaissance frescoes. Alongside the fortified church, the house offers a distinct architectural-history landmark from a considerably later period. The former Evangelical school is also part of the village’s history; it was restored in 2014.

Village Character, Landscape and Orientation

Numerous traditional Saxon homesteads are well preserved in Cincșor. They complement the fortified church and parish house with an insight into farmstead architecture, broadening the village’s architectural history beyond a single religious building. For travellers interested in Transylvanian history, they provide a clear thread to follow: a fortified church, former Evangelical buildings and traditional farmsteads.

The landscape offers a different emphasis. Cincșor lies on flat terrain surrounded by hills on three sides and opening southwards towards the Făgăraș Mountains. The terrain and cardinal directions give the surroundings a clear sense of orientation, while the village’s architectural history tells of different periods of construction.

Cincșor’s historic location on the banks of the Olt was considered particularly important strategically. The separate archaeological site of Cincșor-Cetate lies 6 km east of Cincșor, on the right bank of the Olt. The village’s history along the river and the location of the archaeological site are therefore two distinct points of reference.
