Șirnea lies at an altitude of 1,244 metres at the foot of the Piatra Craiului Mountains and is considered a pastoral settlement. Two specific highlights stand out for planning a trip: the Focul lui Sumedru, held annually on 25 and 26 October, and cycling routes with details on difficulty, distance and elevation gain. This can help you decide whether to plan your stay around local traditions or a cycling tour.

Landscape and trails

Șirnea is part of the Poarta Carpaților ecotourism network. It includes nine marked trails totalling approximately 100 kilometres. This approximate total length describes the network as a whole; the named cycling routes provide their own details on difficulty and distance for planning a specific ride. This gives you the option of exploring the ecotourism trails more broadly or planning individual tours in greater detail.

Culture and traditions

Șirnea became known as Romania’s first tourist village. Biology teacher Nicolae Frunteș initiated a project to promote tourism there. The Muzeul Etnografic, Olimpic și de Artă Contemporană „Nicolae Frunteș” Șirnea is also part of the village’s cultural heritage; the foundations of the museum were laid in 1965. Frunteș is thus connected to the village’s history in two specific ways: through the tourism promotion project and in the museum’s name.

A regular date in the local traditions calendar is Focul lui Sumedru, also known as Focul de Sânmedru. The celebration takes place in Șirnea every year on the night of 25–26 October, and is attended by local residents and tourists. Its annual date gives travellers who wish to experience the celebration a clear reference point when planning their trip. The Măsura Laptelui celebration also has a documented history in the village: its 57th edition took place in Șirnea on 5 July 2026.

Cycling routes and bike rental

The different details provided for each cycling route can help you choose between them. The Șirnea – Cheile Dambovicioarei – Valea Seaca a Pietrelor – Șirnea route is generally described as easy and considered manageable for amateurs. The Fundata–Șirnea–Fundata route is considered relatively easy; it is approximately 15 kilometres each way and has a total elevation gain of 250 metres. For the first route, the general difficulty rating is the main point; for the second, specific details on distance and elevation gain are also available. You can choose whichever information is more useful for planning your own tour. Road and traffic conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Classic MTB bikes can be rented in Șirnea daily from 09:00 to 20:00. Reservations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Please check the rental hours and reservation requirements before your trip.

Search for accommodation based on your reason for travelling

Your reason for travelling is a useful starting point when looking for a hotel in Șirnea. If you want to experience Focul lui Sumedru, you can plan your trip around its recurring October date. For a cycling holiday, factor your chosen route and the need to reserve a rental bike in advance into your preparations.
