Șercaia lies at the confluence of the Șercaia River and the Olt. In the commune, an extensive daffodil landscape and several historically dated churches complement its riverside setting. Those weighing up a stay between nature and architectural history will find two distinct highlights: a specific geographical location and cultural heritage whose dates refer to different buildings.

A riverside setting, daffodils and a festival with a movable date

The Olt flows through Șercaia Commune for about 7.5 kilometres, north of the village of Șercaia and south of the village of Hălmeag. The village itself lies at the confluence of the Șercaia River and the Olt. This gives the area two distinct geographical reference points: the confluence by the village and a longer stretch of river within the commune. This distinction helps you consider the location of the village and the commune’s wider landscape separately.

Dumbrava Vadului, also known as Poiana cu Narcise, covers about 400 hectares. Thousands of Narcissus stellarus daffodils grow there among scattered oak trees. Nature enthusiasts can choose between two distinct points of interest: the course of the Olt and a named daffodil area with oak woodland.

Since 2001, the Festivalul narciselor has been held every year in Șercaia Commune on the Sunday closest to 21 May. The date is therefore set by the nearest Sunday, rather than by a fixed calendar date. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific date for that year’s event in advance.

Getting there and finding your way

The single-track Brașov–Sibiu railway line crosses the commune from east to west for about 11 kilometres. Passenger services stop at Gara Șercaia and Halta Șercaia; one of these also serves freight traffic. When planning a train journey, the two names help you identify the stop on your route. By road, National Road 73A connects Șercaia with Râșnov; 5.2 kilometres of this road run through the commune. The railway information describes a line crossing the area and its passenger stations, while the road information describes a connection with Râșnov and the section within the commune.

Churches and architectural history

The dates of the Evangelical buildings are easy to distinguish. The Evangelical parish house in Șercaia dates to 1839–1840. Its ensemble includes a bell tower dated to 1691 and 1819. The Evangelical church itself dates from 1868–1875 and is dedicated to Saint Catherine. The parish house, bell tower and church therefore each have their own historical dates, which should not be combined into a single construction date.

The Orthodox Church of Sf. Nicolae and the Greek Catholic Church of Sf. Gheorghe are also part of the local religious heritage. Sf. Nicolae dates to 1928, and Sf. Gheorghe to 1793. The Greek Catholic church also has a specific decorative feature in addition to its date: its ceiling is painted sky blue and decorated with gold stars. Those comparing churches by date and denomination will find different affiliations here, rather than a single, uniform building history.

Decorating Easter eggs and local culture

Decorating Easter eggs is part of local tradition and is called “închistritul” or “împistritul” in Șercaia. The art has been practised for a long time and is learned by girls and women within the family or from particularly skilled practitioners. The tradition therefore also encompasses the described way in which the skill is passed on. A 2022 report stated that several women practised and were skilled in the art at that time.

In 2022, children’s workshops were held at the Centrul social-cultural al bisericii „Sfântul Nicolae” in Șercaia, introducing children to the art of decorating eggs. A cultural programme from 2023 also lists the Colecția Muzeală de Etnografie și Istorie Locală at the Centrul Social-Cultural „Sf. Nicolae” in Șercaia.
