Ștefănești can be explored through two distinct interests: the archaeological and cultural heritage of the town, and the natural surroundings of the Stânca-Costești Reservoir. To help plan your visit, first choose your main focus. The cultural heritage ranges from an archaeological site on the edge of town to the Ștefan Luchian Museum; the natural area offers opportunities for birdwatching and access to protected areas.
The Prut, the Reservoir, and Protected Areas
The Stânca-Costești Reservoir lies on the Prut River, on the border between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Both the river and the international border therefore shape the lake’s geographical setting. The Natura 2000 site ROSPA0058 Lacul Stânca-Costești extends partly across the territory of Ștefănești, as well as across the territories of Manoleasa and Ripiceni. The protected area therefore extends beyond the boundaries of a single administrative area.
The area’s natural profile also includes the Stânca Ștefănești geological and botanical reserve. It is considered the only place in Romania where Schivereckia podolica grows. If this botanical feature is important to your visit, bear in mind that local access conditions may vary and check them in advance.
Archaeology and Architectural History
The Ștefănești – La Stârcea archaeological site lies outside the built-up area, on the southeastern edge of the town. It is situated on a terrace on the right bank of the Bașeu, opposite the Podul Bașeului point in the direction of the Prut. It is recorded as an open settlement and a flat necropolis. These two terms refer to different archaeological aspects of the same site.
La Stârcea is associated with three widely separated periods: the Eneolithic, the La Tène period, and the Migration Period. The site therefore cannot be assigned to just one historical period. Those interested in archaeology can use these periods as a guide, while the site’s location and character provide a specific geographical reference.
The Church of Cuv. Parascheva is also part of Ștefănești’s architectural history. It is considered the oldest religious monument in Moldavia adapted for defensive purposes. This distinctive feature combines religious use with a defensive architectural adaptation.
The Ștefan Luchian Museum
Ștefănești is home to the only museum in Romania dedicated to the painter Ștefan Luchian. The museum displays cultural artifacts from the painter’s family collection. They make up the exhibition space “Camera – atelier a lui Ștefan Luchian.” Its connection to the family and the named room give the museum visit a specific focus: commemorating the painter through the cultural artifacts passed down from his family.
Birdwatching and Visit Planning
Ornithologists visit the lake in the Natura 2000 site ROSPA0058 Lacul Stânca-Costești for birdwatching, drawn in part by the variety of bird species found there. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a different perspective on the reservoir than its location on the Prut: the focus here is on birdlife. The protected area also spans several administrative territories, an important distinction when considering its geographical extent.
A 2016 management plan lists tourism, leisure, educational, and scientific activities as permitted in the area, provided visitors follow the rules. Check the current rules before visiting. This will help ensure that your plans take current visiting conditions into account.
Getting There and Choosing a Focus for Your Stay
The reservoir area can be reached via the paved DN 24C Iași–Ștefănești and DN 29D Botoșani–Ștefănești roads. Both routes lead to the reservoir area; no specific distance or journey time is implied. When choosing a hotel in Ștefănești, first decide whether your main interest is archaeology and culture or birdwatching and nature.
