Beclean offers several clear starting points for planning your trip: Băile Figa, with its saline surface features and salt structures, as well as its archaeological significance; churches, castles and local traditions. When looking for a hotel in Beclean, you can first consider whether nature and salt history, architecture or local customs should shape your stay.

Băile Figa: salt features and archaeological significance

The archaeological site of Băile Figa lies roughly halfway between the city of Beclean and the village of Figa, about 300 metres west of the road connecting them. Saline muds, springs, ponds, saltwater streams and halophytic vegetation can be found on the surface. These terms describe a landscape whose plant life is associated with saline conditions.

More recent development also draws on the theme of salt: in 2020, longitudinal and circular salt-aerosol structures were built in Băile Figa. They are described as the first structures of their kind in Romania. According to current findings, the site appears to be the most significant in Transylvania, and one of the most significant in Romania as a whole, for the study of prehistoric salt extraction. Băile Figa thus brings together natural salt features, purpose-built structures and the archaeological significance of salt mining.

The Legacy recreation and rehabilitation centre is located at Băile Figa near Beclean. A report from January 2023 listed three swimming pools there, including one with salt water. If you are planning a visit, check current availability beforehand.

Churches, castles and the history of the town

The Reformed Church in Beclean is a 15th-century building that was extended and renovated in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its Late Gothic details include the west portal, niches in the chancel wall and the window surrounds. These architectural features give the church a distinctive place in the town’s history.

Andras Bethlen Castle was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style. It once stood amid a park laid out as an English landscape garden in the 19th century. Another historical landmark is Count Pál Bethlen’s castle: it was built in the 17th century near Beclean’s former fortress and features medieval architectural elements. The different dates help place this architectural and local history in context.

Muzeul Casa de Vânătoare opened in 2009 as the first public museum in the history of the city of Beclean. Its establishment adds another dimension of the town’s history to its architectural attractions.

Local traditions and markets

Înstruțatul boului is celebrated every year on Pentecost Sunday in the Figa district of Beclean. The custom involves leading a decorated ox up the hill behind the church and then letting it descend towards the village. The celebration date follows Rusalii, the Pentecost festival. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates for the relevant year.

A market is held in Beclean on Wednesdays, where producers from the surrounding area sell agricultural products, livestock products and handicrafts. The selection and arrangements may vary. In addition, fairs are held in Beclean two or three times a year. If you are planning a specific market or festival visit, it is advisable to check the current event dates in advance.

Horses and carriage rides

Herghelia Beclean offers riding and carriage rides. It also breeds Lipitan horses, including the black and bay colour variety, as well as Semigreul Românesc horses. This allows an interest in horses to be combined both with the activities on offer and with the history of horse breeding. If you are planning a riding or carriage trip, check the current schedule in advance.

To choose a focus for your visit, you can compare the themes: Băile Figa represents a salt landscape and prehistoric salt extraction; the church and castles represent different periods of architectural history; and the markets and Înstruțatul boului represent local products and traditions.
