Almașu Mic combines local cultural history with a clearly defined valley landscape. Its cultural heritage includes a folklore ensemble with festival awards, an Orthodox church and archaeological finds; at the same time, the valley and wooded hills shape its geographical setting. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between them: the cultural traces tell the story of the place, while the earthwork fortification on a hard-to-reach hill presents a separate practical consideration.

Valley, Hills and Earthwork Fortification

Almașu Mic lies in the Valea Almașului valley. The stream of the same name is a left-bank tributary of the Barcău. This places the village within a specific valley and waterway network, rather than identifying it only by its name. About one kilometre south of Almașu Mic, Pădurea Ţâclu covers a hill spur overlooking the valley. The stream and hill spur offer two different points of reference: one belongs to the Barcău waterway network, while the other marks the terrain south of the village. A hill spur is a projecting part of the terrain.

The earthwork fortification of Almașu Mic is situated on a wooded hill that is difficult to access. Unlike the valley setting, its accessibility is a separate practical consideration: if you are considering a visit, check access in advance and take the difficulty into account.

Cultural Heritage and Historical Finds

The classification, updated in 2021, of the traditional culture of Bihor County places Almașu Mic in the Valea Barcăului ethnographic subzone. One specific connection to folklore is the “Fii satului” ensemble from Almașu Mic: it won first and third prizes at the “Muguri de dor” International Folklore Festival in Poieni. The regional classification identifies the cultural setting, while the awards record a specific festival result for the ensemble.

The Orthodox church in Almașu Mic was founded in 1954. Archaeological finds offer another perspective on the place’s history: an exhibition at the Muzeul orașului Oradea – Complex cultural featured more than 80 silver coins from the 13th century, as well as pieces of jewellery, metal objects and ceramics. These items were discovered in Almașu Mic in the summer of 2018. The find site was Almașu Mic; the exhibition was held at the named museum in Oradea.

Plan Your Journey

A local road branches off before Chioag and leads to Almașu Mic. A 2024 listing names Route 31 of Bihor County’s public transport service, running between Almașu Mic, Săldăbagiu de Barcău and Marghita. This identifies two different travel connections: the local road as an access route and the three places served by Route 31. Before travelling, check the current road conditions or timetable, depending on which connection you plan to use.
