Horgești combines church and local history with fishing at Lacul Horgești. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first clarify your main interests: are you particularly interested in architectural history and religious buildings, or would you like fishing to be a central part of your stay? The village offers different points of interest, from churches with documented dates to fishing opportunities at the lake.

Churches and Architectural History

The parish church “Sfinţii Împăraţi Constantin şi Elena” was built between 1885 and 1889 by Profira Strat and her son George. The Catholic church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” was built between 1927 and 1938 in the Gothic style. Their construction periods differ considerably; the builders of the parish church are named, while the Gothic style is an additional architectural feature of the Catholic church. The Catholic church was therefore built several decades after the parish church.

The cemetery church “Sfinţii Arhangheli Mihail şi Gavriil” is located in the western part of the village on Dumbrava Hill. Its iconostasis appears to date from around 1800. An iconostasis is a screen decorated with icons that separates the sanctuary from the nave.

The wooden church “Sfinţii Voievozi” is a Class B historic monument with code BC-II-m-B-00845. Its roof is covered with shingles described as “în coadă de rândunică.” The iconostasis and two bells were brought over from the former church in the village centre.

Conacul Strat, a historic monument dating from 1890, formerly served as the Horgeşti town hall. Unlike the religious buildings, it points to a former municipal function. Chronologically, the story spans from the iconostasis, which may date from around 1800, through buildings from the late 19th century to the Catholic church built between 1927 and 1938.

Fishing at Lacul Horgești

The rectangular Lacul Horgești is approximately 900 metres long and up to 350 metres wide; at high water, its area is 54.7 hectares. Its maximum depth is approximately 2.5 metres. Its approximate length is around two and a half times its maximum width.

You can fish for carp at Lacul Horgești. The operator estimates the stock at approximately 400 carp weighing at least 15 kilograms; carp weighing 20 kilograms are also caught regularly. Information about the fish stock may change over time.

There are 22 fishing spots at the lake, some of which have huts. Toilets with running water and showers with hot water are also available. Fishing equipment can also be rented. As facilities may change, check what is currently available before your visit.
