For an exploration of São Miguel Do Mato, two hiking trails offer specific points of reference. The PR27 VIS – Rota do Vale do Rio Troço allows visitors to visit the Capela do Nosso Senhor da Agonia in Frádega and approaches the Rio Troço several times. The PR5 Caminho de São Miguel do Mato follows a disused section of the Vale do Vouga railway and crosses the Ribeira da Pacheca via stepping stones. This offers a choice of distinct highlights: a riverside trail with a chapel visit, and a route featuring a railway section, a stream crossing and a former parish church.

The PR27 in the Rio Troço Valley

The PR27 VIS – Rota do Vale do Rio Troço is a 5.21 km circular hiking trail. A municipal route information source from September 2025 rates it as easy. Its length, circular layout and difficulty rating provide different points of reference for planning a hike: the distance gives a concrete sense of its extent, the circular layout describes the character of the trail, and the rating indicates its level of difficulty.

In the Rio Troço Valley, the route links forest and agricultural paths with small rural settlements in the Viseu Dão-Lafões subregion. The river runs through Bodiosa and São Miguel do Mato along the PR27, and the trail approaches it several times. This makes the Rio Troço a recurring point of reference in the landscape during the hike. The route thus combines a specific circular trail with a larger valley landscape and its rural settlements.

In Frádega, São Miguel do Mato, the PR27 allows visitors to visit the Capela do Nosso Senhor da Agonia. The chapel stands on a promontory and is part of the local religious heritage along the route. Alongside the riverside landscape, the hike therefore also features a named place and its distinctive setting.

Railway section and stream crossing on the PR5

The PR5 Caminho de São Miguel do Mato highlights a different connection with the landscape. The trail follows a disused section of the Vale do Vouga railway through an agricultural landscape. The Ribeira da Pacheca is crossed via stepping stones—a specific feature of the route that distinguishes it from the PR27’s repeated proximity to the river.

The PR5 also includes a visit to the former parish church of S. Miguel do Mato, known as Igreja Velha. The railway section, stream crossing and former religious site give the route several clearly defined themes. By contrast, the PR27 foregrounds the Rio Troço, its circular layout and the chapel.

Choose routes to suit your interests

If you want to plan your hike based on a stated distance and difficulty rating, the PR27 offers specific guidance: it is 5.21 km long and rated as easy. If you are particularly interested in a disused railway line or a crossing on stepping stones, the PR5 comes into focus for its described route features. Comparing the two helps you decide which aspect matters most to you, rather than treating both trails as alike.

You can also use this priority when looking for a holiday apartment. First consider whether a riverside trail and chapel, or a railway section and stream crossing, will play a bigger role in your excursion plans.
