The trails around Reriz offer different points of reference for planning: the GR60 focuses on the route along the Rio Paiva and then out of the valley, while the PR5 provides a specific distance and a detour to the water. Festivals and chapels add a cultural dimension. You can therefore treat hiking, local traditions and architectural history as distinct focal points for your stay.

Hiking along the Rio Paiva

After crossing at Ponte do Brasileiro in Pinheiro, the GR60 – Rota das Montanhas Mágicas follows the Rio Paiva to Reriz. At Reriz, the route leaves the Paiva Valley towards São Martinho das Moitas. There, the trail runs along unpaved paths and some paved sections. This sequence defines the character of the route: first the river, then the climb out of the valley.

The PR5 – Trilho do Paiva is 12.7 kilometres long and is a short-distance hiking trail. It starts at the Largo by Reriz parish church. If you are planning this hike, you can use the stated distance as a concrete point of reference; check the starting point locally before setting off. Before Casal Bom, the route also offers a detour to a picnic area by the Rio Paiva. So, in addition to the route itself, there is a named riverside spot that you can factor into your plans.

Festivals and architectural history

In Reriz, the festival of Nossa Senhora de Rodes is celebrated on the last Sunday in May. SĂŁo Martinho follows on the weekend after 11 November. If you want to plan your trip around either festival, check the exact dates in advance. The two occasions are well spaced apart and offer different points of reference in the spring and autumn calendar.

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Rodes stands on Monte das Cabeçadas above Reriz. Its foundation is said to date back to Leovigildo Pires de Almidra and is probably dated to around 1140. As a Marian shrine, it was a destination for many pilgrims. Its location affords wide-ranging views that include Reriz. The site thus combines a traditional religious significance with a striking connection to the landscape.

Other chapels also reflect different periods. Capela de Santo António is outside Reriz, on Monte do Outeiro, and is considered an example of Mannerist religious architecture. Capela do Bom Jesus dates from the 17th century. Capela de S. Sebastião is thought to date from the second half of the 16th century. In the early years of the 19th century, it served as the parish church while Igreja de S. Martinho was being rebuilt. Capela de S. José is in the centre of Reriz and adds a local landmark to this architectural history.

River landscapes and local lore

Near Reriz, the Rio Paiva forms meanders across river terraces that it created itself. At the Ruínas da Ponte de Cabaços, the remains of a granite bridge with a medieval-style profile stand over the river. Today, only part of the bridge remains visible: a flood in the 1960s destroyed a large section, and its deterioration continued over the years. Around these ruins, the Rio Paiva provides favourable conditions for biodiversity and is home to several rare and protected animal and plant species.

Another river legend is associated with Poço do Abade. The pool is said to have belonged to the abbots of Reriz; according to local lore, trout and other fish were caught there for the priests. This is a historical story, not a statement about fishing today. Together with the river terraces and the bridge remains, it offers another perspective on the Paiva: not only as a companion along the hiking route, but also as a landscape shaped by past use and its natural features.
