Canas de Senhorim brings together several distinct cultural themes: the history of its forais, buildings from different centuries, archaeological evidence and festival traditions. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these themes distinct: the Circuito Pré-Histórico focuses on archaeological subjects, while the festivals draw on local history and medieval pageantry in different ways.

History and Archaeology

In April 1196, Canas de Senhorim received a foral from D. Sancho I; in March 1514, D. Manuel I confirmed it with a second foral. The two charters mark different stages in the town’s history: its granting and its later confirmation. Archaeologically, the story reaches further back. The Orca das Pramelas is one of the four megalithic monuments on the Circuito Pré-Histórico in the Concelho de Nelas. Canas de Senhorim is also one of three localities in the Concelho where the most significant Roman archaeological remains are concentrated. Thus, megalithic monuments and Roman remains represent distinct archaeological themes.

Buildings from Several Centuries

The religious heritage includes the 18th-century Igreja Matriz de São Salvador and two chapels of different ages: the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Piedade dates from the 16th century, and the Capela de São Sebastião from the 17th century. These dates provide a clear timeline if you are interested in the history of sacred architecture. The town’s solares and houses offer a different architectural perspective. The Solar da Família Abreu Madeira includes the Capela da Nossa Senhora da Conceição and a stately tower. The Solar do Visconde de Pedralva is surrounded by a garden with trees more than a hundred years old. The Casa do Cruzeiro is known for its intricately designed balcony railing and its distinctive artistic architectural character. Architecture can therefore be explored both chronologically and by building type: religious buildings sit alongside solares with their distinctive features and gardens.

Festivals, Market and Crafts

The festivals also differ in how they relate to local history. The Canas de Senhorim Carnival grew out of the historical social differences between the Paço and Rossio neighborhoods. According to local tradition, it has been held regularly for more than 400 years. The Feira Medieval de Canas de Senhorim began in 1993 and reenacts historical moments from the Middle Ages. Its market features handicrafts, regional and convent sweets, agricultural products, traditional drinks and traditional foods; individual vendors may vary from one edition to another. The Carnival thus draws on the history of two neighborhoods, while the Feira combines medieval reenactments with a market.

In Canas de Senhorim, craftswomen also make traditional dolls, educational games and other original textile creations. For culturally minded travelers, these crafts add a textile dimension to the festival traditions, distinct from the historical reenactments at the Feira.

Planning Your Archaeological Visit

Signage, information panels and road access are practical considerations for the archaeological route. Municipal visitor information dated October 2, 2018, mentions road signs and explanatory panels at the sites covering excavations, dates and archaeological finds. According to this information, the sites are accessible by car, with one exception: a short walk is required to reach the Orca do Folhadal. Check current signage and access before setting out, and allow time for this walk at the Orca do Folhadal. The road signs and explanatory panels serve different purposes: one helps visitors find their way, while the other provides context for the archaeological themes.

Another visitor attraction is the renovated swimming complex in Parque Urbano Professora Maria Benilde Pereira Mouraz. If you plan to include it in your day, check the current opening hours in advance.
