On the Rota MegalĂtica da Nave – PR2, the trail leads to menhirs and monumental megalithic tombs. The tombs are associated with burial practices from around 6,000 years ago. Another archaeological landmark is Statue-Menhir 3 of Serra da Nave, which is attributed to the Early or Middle Bronze Age. Comparing the dates shows that these remains belong to different periods.
Riverside scenery and rocky uplands
Other explorations bring the Rio Paiva to the fore. The Rota do Paiva – PR1 follows the river and the surrounding rural landscape. Parque Paiva Natura encompasses riverside ecosystems along the Rio Paiva, with a remarkable variety of animal and plant species. The park has a walking trail and a motorised route; ecological and approved signage, information panels and printed visitor information supplement the routes. The Rota dos Penedos da Fonte Santa – PR6 offers a different landscape, taking visitors across the rocky Nave plateau, with its geological heritage and distinctive wildlife and plant life. The river and rural surroundings, riverside ecosystems and rocky uplands therefore offer distinct settings to explore.
Water and leisure
The reservoir at Barragem do Vilar, near Moimenta Da Beira, offers good conditions for water sports. A municipal description dated 22 July 2021 lists a beach bar, shaded areas, picnic facilities, toilets, showers and a diving platform at Zona Balnear da Barragem de Vilar. Activities listed include family activities, picnics, birdwatching and sport fishing. Check the current condition of the facilities mentioned before visiting.
In Alvite, you will find Zona de Lazer da Ribeira da Pontinha. A municipal description dated 4 August 2021 mentions a reservoir suitable for swimming, as well as green areas shaded by trees. The descriptions of the two bathing and leisure areas thus differ considerably: at Vilar, several facilities and activities feature alongside the water, while Alvite is characterised by its reservoir and shaded green areas. Here too, it is advisable to check current conditions before visiting.
Local history and crafts
The tower of the parish church in Moimenta Da Beira was built in 1932 and contains the bells from the S. Francisco Monastery in Vila da Rua. Casa Museu Gente da Nave was founded in November 2000. Domestic objects preserved there include iron pots, wooden clogs, straw mats and patchwork quilts. Fundação Aquilino Ribeiro offers another way to explore the area’s history: it displays hundreds of the writer Aquilino Ribeiro’s personal belongings, including books, postcards and photographs.
Traditional crafts in Alvite also reflect local skills. Items traditionally made there include baskets, lace shawls, crivos and masseiras. Together with the household objects preserved in the museum, these examples offer different insights into everyday objects and craft traditions.
