For a cultural stay in Mangualde, there are several themes to explore: traces of archaeological settlements, a palace complex, religious architecture and a circular walking route. The Feira dos Santos adds an event in November 2026.

Archaeological traces and periods

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Castelo stands on the summit of the hill of the same name. An Iron Age fortified settlement once stood here and was later Romanised. The chapel and settlement site meet in one specific place, providing a tangible point of reference for anyone interested in Mangualde’s early history.

The Sítio Arqueológico da Raposeira lies at the western foot of Monte da Senhora do Castelo in Mangualde. The Citânia da Raposeira shows evidence of a Roman settlement phase from the last decade of the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD. Together, these sites offer a perspective spanning the Iron Age to the Roman settlement phase, without requiring a single site to cover every period.

Palace complex and religious architecture

The Palácio dos Condes de Anadia complex includes the palace, gardens, estate and adjacent woodland. The complex is classified as a Property of Public Interest (CIP). This classification therefore applies to the entire group of different components.

The Palácio Anadia is an example of civil Rococo architecture and is also shaped by northern Portuguese Baroque models with Nasoni influence. For architecture enthusiasts, the appeal lies in this combination: alongside its stylistic classification, another architectural influence is noted. The building cannot therefore be reduced to a single stylistic label.

The Igreja de São Julião is Mangualde’s parish church. Its grounds include the churchyard and the Stations of the Cross, with the ten remaining crosses. Unlike the palace complex, whose components also include gardens, an estate and woodland, the church, churchyard and Stations of the Cross form a religious ensemble here.

Feira dos Santos in November

The Feira dos Santos takes place in Mangualde in November; the 2026 edition also falls in this month. It brings together traditional food—including febras, enchidos, dried fruit and wine—with handicrafts and agricultural products. Alongside the archaeological and architectural themes, it offers another reason to visit: food, crafts and agricultural produce are all part of the Feira dos Santos.

If you are focusing on cultural history, you can first consider whether archaeology, architecture or religious architecture interests you most.

A circular route for orientation

The Pegadas com História circular route starts at Rossio, next to the Paços do Concelho, which houses the municipal tourist information office. If you want to include the route in your plans, you have a named starting point and can also take the location of the information office into account.

A historical look at Live Beach

In March 2011, the Live Beach Mangualde project proposed building an artificial beach complex on a 22,500 m² site beside Monte de Nossa Senhora do Castelo. The plans at the time included an 11,000 m² sandy area and a 60 m-long saltwater pool. These details describe the project as it was planned at the time and add a distinct historical note to the archaeological and architectural themes.
