Valdigem offers a practical way to explore the cultural landscape of the Alto Douro when planning a trip: granite boundary marker No. 91 stands beside a named route, while other highlights relate to winegrowing, production and tastings. At Quinta dos Poços, schist soil, cultivated land, an 18th-century manor house and different winemaking methods come together. Quinta das Brôlhas adds wine tourism with a tasting. An edition of Roteiro às Adegas took place in Valdigem on 18 April 2026.
A granite boundary marker as a sign of the cultural landscape
Granite boundary marker No. 91 stands in Lugar do Barreiro, in the parish of Valdigem, beside the route connecting Barreiro with Alto da Portela. Classified as an IIP, the marker is one of more than 100 boundary markers that geographically delimit the Alto Douro wine region, also known as Alto Douro Vinhateiro. Its location and function offer two different perspectives: the route anchors the individual stone in a named local context, while the group marks out the larger winegrowing area. Those interested in cultural landscapes can thus consider a specific heritage site together with its role in defining this boundary.
Quinta dos Poços: land, architecture and winemaking
At Quinta dos Poços, the layout of the land, architecture and winemaking can be considered separately. The estate covers 25 hectares of schist soil; 21 hectares are fully mechanised and laid out in terraces and along the fall line. The main house is a typical 18th-century rural manor house. The land and the house offer two distinct perspectives on the estate: agricultural design and architectural history.
Winemaking is carried out separately by grape variety or plot. The methods used include granite lagares, where grapes are foot-trodden, and stainless-steel tanks with individual temperature control. Alongside the separation by variety or plot, different vessels and methods are therefore used. Anyone wishing to understand wine not only as a finished product but also in terms of how it is made will find a connection here between schist soil, land design and vinification.
Tasting at Quinta das Brôlhas
Quinta das Brôlhas offers wine tourism with a tasting of the estate’s red or white Reserva wines. Unlike Quinta dos Poços, where the focus is on the land, architecture and winemaking, the emphasis here is on a tasting. If this offering is important to your travel plans, confirm the arrangements before your visit.
A wine route on a set date
An edition of Roteiro às Adegas took place in Valdigem on 18 April 2026, organised by the Associação Amigos de Valdigem. Participants could visit several wine cellars and experience wine culture, local gastronomy and conviviality. The event adds a community setting to the themes of winegrowing and tasting and is tied specifically to this date.
Choose the focus of your stay
The different perspectives are easy to distinguish when planning your visit: the boundary marker represents cultural heritage and the geographical delimitation of the wine region; Quinta dos Poços brings together landscape, architectural history and production; Quinta das Brôlhas offers a tasting. Roteiro às Adegas, meanwhile, is a past event featuring wine cellars, gastronomy and conviviality. You can choose your focus according to whether you are more interested in the cultural landscape, winegrowing or a tasting.
