If you are planning a trip to Campo de Besteiros, you can choose between sacred architectural history, art, festival traditions and cycling or walking routes, each offering a different focus. If you are looking for a holiday rental, first consider whether culture, a particular festival date or a route should shape your stay. Each theme raises different planning questions: for a festival, the date can vary; for a cycling route, the stated distance is one factor to consider.

Chapels, church art and other cultural sites

The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Campo was built in the early 17th century, around 1616. The main altarpiece of the Igreja de NÂȘ SrÂȘ do Campo contains a limestone statue of Nossa Senhora do Carmo dating from the 15th century, created by a master from the Coimbra workshops. A main altarpiece is the central altar structure; the term places the statue within that structure. The sculpture dates from an earlier period than the construction of the chapel. In a later century, the Igreja de NÂȘ SrÂȘ do Campo was extended and its interior redesigned.

On Monte de CalvĂĄrio are the SantuĂĄrio do Senhor do CalvĂĄrio and crosses spread across the mountain, marking the Stations of the Cross. The arrangement of the crosses makes the Stations of the Cross visible as a sequence through the landscape. A Casinha de Leitura, a small reading house, was inaugurated in the Parque de Campo de Besteiros. Its name offers a different cultural focus from the sacred sites: here, reading takes centre stage.

Festival traditions with a date that varies

The Festa das Cruzes do Guardão is celebrated annually as a tradition that has been observed for more than 300 years. Its date follows the calendar of the Ascension of Christ and can therefore vary from year to year. If you would like to include the celebration in your trip, check the date for your intended travel year before finalising your holiday rental. One traditional procession route for the Festa das Cruzes runs from the Capela de São Bartolomeu to Guardão. The date and the route answer different questions: one helps you choose the year to travel, while the other describes the procession’s course.

Routes with different focuses

The Subida Épica Campo de Besteiros–Caramulinho cycling climb is 15.7 km long and classified as a Category 1 climb. It begins in Campo de Besteiros and ends at Alto do Caramulinho. The distance can be factored into your cycling plans; the classification and endpoint provide further specific details.

The Rota de Santiago begins and ends at Monte de S. Marcos, next to the chapel of the same name. Mighty cork oaks grow in the area, shaping a distinctive woodland landscape. The route leads to Ponte da Portela, a structure reminiscent of Roman architecture, built over the Ribeira de Água d’Alte stream. This route therefore focuses on landscape and a structure by the stream, while the cycling climb is characterised by its length and classification.
