In Guardão, two hiking trails can be compared directly: the PR3 Rota das Cruzes and the PR4 Rota dos Caleiros are almost the same length, but start at different times and in different places. Viewpoints, cultural sites in Caramulo and the Festa das Cruzes offer further points of reference for planning your trip.
Hiking Trails and Starting Points
The PR3 Rota das Cruzes runs through the Freguesia do Guardão. It is eight kilometres long, has an elevation difference of 820 metres and starts at 09:00 next to the Posto de Turismo do Caramulo. The PR4 Rota dos Caleiros also runs through the Freguesia do Guardão. Its starting point is the Caramulinho, where it begins at 08:00. At 8.2 kilometres, it is 200 metres longer than the PR3.
For planning your day, the two trails therefore differ not only in their starting points: the PR4 starts an hour earlier, while the PR3 is described as having an elevation difference of 820 metres. Check the starting details before your hiking day. Another hiking route, the Grande Rota do Caramulo, starts at the Museu do Caramulo.
Views and Scenery
The Caramulinho is the highest point; from there, you can see the sea and the Serra da Estrela. A terrace at the Capela do Menino Jesus offers views across the entire Vale de Besteiros. In Pedrógão, you’ll find the Penedo do Equilíbrio: a large granite block balanced on another granite block. These three places offer different scenic points of reference, and the views described from them do not all look out over the same area.
A section of Roman paved road is another local landmark. It is in Guardão de Baixo, about 500 metres east of Caramulo. The approximate distance and location help pinpoint this historic stretch of road.
Culture in Caramulo and Guardão
The Caramulo Experience Center is located in the town of Caramulo and covers more than 2,400 square metres. CEISCaramulo is also in Caramulo, in the former primary school of Paredes do Guardão. The Museu do Caramulo was inaugurated in 1959; it is also the starting point for the Grande Rota do Caramulo. The museum therefore brings together a historical connection and a practical starting point for a hiking route.
The town’s history goes back further still: Caramulo was founded in 1921. For travellers who want to include local cultural sites as well as scenery in their outing, these places offer different points of interest. The places described are in Caramulo, whereas the PR3 and PR4 are associated with the Freguesia do Guardão.
Festa das Cruzes and Regional Cuisine
The Festa das Cruzes has been kept alive by the residents of four freguesias in the concelho for more than 300 years. The crosses used at the festival are decorated with precious metals, pearls, flowers, fruit and seasonal vegetables. The procession follows the old route from the Capela de São Bartolomeu to the Igreja do Guardão. This route and the elaborately decorated crosses provide tangible cultural points of reference for the festival tradition.
Another event with a set date in 2026 is the Rampa do Caramulo: its 35th edition is scheduled for 24 and 25 October. You can add this date to your travel plans; check the latest event information before visiting.
Regional cuisine also has its own event. With support from the Junta de Freguesia do Guardão, the Semana Gastronómica do Cabrito da Serra do Caramulo reached its 20th edition. The week aims to preserve the tradition of oven-baked goat meat cooked in a dish made from Barro Negro de Molelos. Festival traditions and food culture thus complement the hiking and cultural themes without requiring any particular itinerary for your stay.
